got my 915's back from the machine shop
« on: April 15, 2013 - 08:57:22 PM »
I am so impressed with what Car Parts and Machine has done with the heads that I bought from Moparts. Turns out my gut feeling was right, the guy sold me a bunch of junk with bent valves and mixed bag of crappy old valves at that. I had to have a whole set of guides done on one head and the other head for whatever reason needed reaming because the guides were too tight. The guy had to literally cut one of the valves in half to get it out of the head, in a word, fugly. He did some blending and mild porting deshrouding, etc. and I cannibalized my 906 heads for their new stainless 214/181 Manley valves. All cleaned up with polished combustion chambers and nice new beehive springs the heads really make me smile. The engine is coming together and I only need a few more pieces parts to put it together. I am actually using my last set of magnum exhaust manifolds so the engine is going to look exactly like a stock 383, down to the pie tin and the big old v-twin compressor for the air conditioner.

Cool, ya, I used to have 915s on my 440.  Had them cleaned up with some mild port work, and they performed great!!
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

No it was not Don. I don't even remember this guys name. He was on Moparts and I had to track him down luckily through a friend here. Its a long story but in the end when the heads did not show up and I got worried, no emails returned and then realized I had no contact information I started asking on Moparts and in the end go booted. No big loss, most of the cool people are here anyway. Just adds insult to injury to find that he sold me cores with bad valves for 500 bucks. Live and learn I guess. They are nice now and that's all that counts!

Whoa.  $500 for any used iron heads, regardless if claimed "done," is a lot IMHO.

W/the advent of 440source heads, I wouldn't bother w/doing any iron heads unless I need 100 point OEM look.

Glad your head work was done by a real professional.

I would have done aluminum heads but i had already bought the rotating assembly with these iron heads in mind.  I have always liked 915's and I'm actually gonna use my magnum exhaust manifolds.
