Where did my disc brakes come from???
« on: March 16, 2005 - 02:30:14 PM »
I'm trying to replace my brake pads and the rubber hose that connects the solid line to the caliper. I ordered parts for a 70 Challenger. Now reality has set in that these disc brakes I have are NOT from a 70 Challenger at all. In my pictures, the pads on the left are for a 70, the ones on the right are what I need. The brake hoses don't fit either. The 70 ones have fittings that are ever so slightly too large. Just for the heck of it, I went to the parts store and talked grumpy parts guy into showing me brake hoses for a 72, and a 74 Challenger. They were slightly different, but they had the same size threading on the fittings as the 70. :banghead: So now I'm thinking I don't even have E-body brakes. Can anyone tell me where these came from? The single piston caliper has the numbers 3699, and 983 on the back of it. I can't bear the thought of going back to grumpy parts guy with another wrong guess. I think he already wants to give me a public flogging. :spank: Thanks for any help.

Mike,

I called my auto parts guy and we quite possibly found the pads you need.  Call me or get a hold of me on AOL or in the chat later so we can discuss this.  These pads sure aren't ebody pads.  I will be taking my laptop with your break pad picture to the auto parts store after work tomorrow to determine which one of the 2 pads we have narrowed it down to are the correct pads for your set up.  This will also help us figure out where your set up came from.  As far as the rubber hose fitting goes, we can always get an adapter fitting to make it work.

Like I said, 73 + A body disc brakes.
Mek ask for pads for a 73 dart swinger. Brake hoses are expensive. plan on $70 for both easily.
Hes a link to show you the pads.

74chall,
I think you are on the right track. I ever so vaguely remember someone saying mid-70 A-bodies were good donor cars for E-body disc brakes. I wish the picture in your link was the actual pad. Mopar does make a couple of different sets of odd-shaped pads. I believe you are right though.

 April,
Thanks for the help. I'll send you an E-mail.

That hose setup looks like it is adapted to fit that application. You can see the joint on the banjo fitting and where the hose comes together, it looks like it has a crush washer in there to seal the joint. Also the hose has a spot for a wrench that wouldnt be need if they didnt screw together. The brake pads are the same that i have on my 72. they were converted over to 76 valiant parts. I just pulled a set from the shelf (wagner mx84) and they are the same as yours. I dont have the calipers in stock so I cant look at them and the hoses i show for that application is different then the one pictured but i think you have a " custom " unit there In my opinion. I appoligize if i merly pointed out the obvious.  Tom

MEK, have a look at the mopar action disc brake swap.  http://www.moparaction.com/Tech/archive/disc-main.html   Specifically this image: http://www.moparaction.com/Tech/archive/disc/16.jpg  Looks like pads for the later 70's slider calipers.

hope that helps.

Guys,
Thanks for the info. The latest guess is I have mid 70's A-body brake pads(highly likely). The hoses are another matter. It might be that I still have the drum brake hoses from a 70 E-body. I'll let you know when I visit grumpy old parts guy again today.

Update:
Yep, disc brakes for a mid 70's A-body connect perfectly to drum brake hoses for an E-body. Good call Screwy Squirrel.
