Identifying My Transmission
« on: March 22, 2005 - 05:08:09 PM »
:madvibe: O.K. I give up I've searched everywhere I know and still can't identify my transmission. Not sure if I have a 727 (I hope) or a 904. Some history on the car. I bought it 2 months ago it was originally a 318 car, that motor was replaced years ago with a 340 with a mild cam. I was told it was used for 1/4 mile racing. I pulled the motor and trans last weekend in preparation for painting (since then I decided to purchase a 360/380 H.P. Mopar Performance Crate Motor). Now back to the trans I've looked everywhere on this thing and cant identify it. I heard about the notch in the pan but somewhere along the way the stock pan was replaced by an after market chrome pan.

Next question, has anyone done a 340 to 360 crate swap?? I'm wondering how much will transfer, i.e. pulleys, brackets, flex plate, motor mounts. Any help would be appreciated. I'm really not informed yet on small blocks. I'm better with Big Blocks, seven years ago I sold my 72 Chally with a 383 and 671 Dyers Blower so now I'm back to spendin money on a Mopar and lovin every minute of it.  :grinyes:

on the right side of the pan under the dipstick the pan will either be straight or it will bulge out around the front servo loking eithe rstraight down from the top or from below if the pan rail is straight it is a 904 the bulge is the 727
virtually everything will transfer with the excpetion of the crank pulley, it May be off line due to thicker damper & the need for a balanced torque converter
