Had to call the Rollback..
« on: April 28, 2013 - 10:47:48 AM »
Took the car out last Sat.....stopped at one store...no problem.......stopped to get gas..........no problem..........stopped at Lowes.......came out........attempted to start the car.   Sounded like I hit a bad place in the flywheel although I didn't think I had one..........tried a few times to get it to turn the engine......no go......then complete silence.................opened the hood..thought maybe .......well I didn't really know.  Felt of the starter......it had came loose and fallen down on the header.   Looked under the car.... both mounting bolts laying on the pavement............ :faint: :faint:.   Called Hagerty Road Assistance........I was only 7.3 miles from home......no charge.   :worshippy  Guess my yearly payment is justified.   So........I found that I had 2 lengths of bolts....one long and one short.  The short one had  wollered  (sp) out the hole in the bell housing and would not hold anymore.  So a longer bolt and now all is well.   Just had to sit in the parking lot a little while.........several good comments while I was there but...........Had to tell the story................

Yes, always glad to hear a happy ending.

And, that I am not alone!   I had to call AAA Road Assistance when my clutch went 1/2 way to a friend's where we were planning on dropping the tranny to locate the source of rough shifting (saga of other threads circa last Fall: it was the wrong size bearing retainer, left on the original small block input when previous owners swapped up to a non-original big block).

Anyhoo, AAA membership paid for itself that morning, fer sure!

Question (and not meaning to highjack the thread or anything but): Anyone have any opinions, comments or experience with "American Collector's" Insurance?  That is who my wife and I are with, supposedly a 'classic-oriented subsidiary' of GEICO?

Glad it all worked out.  I was at a cruise-in last Saturday and we there was a 40 Ford that refused to start and he called the tow truck.  That started us to talking about these old cars. We all agreed that we never give someone a hard time because their car died out. We have all had to have them towed home for one reason or another. Never laugh at the other guy, for tomorrow it might be you on the hook...... :2thumbs:

Glad you got it fixed up quick! :2thumbs:
I had to use CAA (Canadian version of AAA) a few years ago too. Turned out to be a bad battery cable ( green death)
It's tough on your pride/ego seeing your car on a rollback.  :eek4:

I thought about that but all the tools I needed were at home and locked up......The short bolt would have been a problem anyway..............One guy came up to us while loading and asked.........you buying???..............had to tell the sad story........no just getting her back home.....

Yes I too have had to use AAA on my trip in Octo. after 3500 miles the front end was very dodgy and hard to steer so I had it towed from Vail to Denver and once I tore the front end down I found the Kframe was cracked where the pivot point is , so I am glad I DIDNT TRY TO NEGOTIATE THE MOUNTAIN PASSES,(I was not happy not being able to complete the trip)the fact of the matter is we drive our cars so they are prone to break down the more we drive em  :2thumbs:

Yea no shame here just glad to have the car home safe and sound no matter what happened to the car :stirpot:
