Best Carb For a 68 440hp??
« on: April 26, 2013 - 10:50:54 AM »
I have installed a 68 440 hp and a 4 speed in my 74 cuda. The 440 has a 509/292 purple cam with 906 heads a edelbrock torker  manifold, hedman elite headers and a 750 holley AED carb. The carb came with the engine and looks good but don't know much about it. Would this be the right carb to use or am a better off with a different carb?? I had read a article in one of my mopar magazines that the 950 holley would be better for the set up I have on the engine right now. I am using the car for the street. Any ideas which is better for what I have?? Thanks

If it were mine, I would probably install a Holley 850 hp or a Proform 850.  It runs great I'm sure with the 750, but it is a little under-carbed imho.....  0.02....

What you have is one of the best carbs , I would work with it , larger might get you 20 hp at the top end but for most driving situation it will work well , I agree it is small but probably is not worth $600 to upgrade at this point .Just to clarify I would also use a 850 proform ideally but there are other ways to get more HP for $600.

ya, if its un-ported 906 heads, then your 750 should be fine, if its dialed in right.
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

A 950 would be way overkill in my opinion.
My 600+ hp 496 is making serious power with an 850 DP!
Heck, for 40 more hp, put one of these on:

Stick with the 750. Think of it this way, you spend 90% of your driving time at less than WOT. Therefor the extra cfm from a larger carb won't do you any good. If you were racing and looking for every last HP then go bigger. The 750 will work better on the street.

Ya, I had ported 915 heads on a 440, and my Holley 750 DP was more than adequate.

I think some people are pushing 950 cfm carbs just to sell more carbs.

Depends on the usage , I have typically used 2x the CI for carb size & I have proven that going larger than that can still improve power even using stock heads with port work , my Duster ran a 1050 carb on a 440 CI build using "only" 516 ported heads & it ran faster than ot had with the 950 on it .

my understanding is a big carb (2 X displacement) is really only going to offer benefit when you are at the end of a 1/8  or 1/4 mile running flat out.
But I have limited experience in that department.
