After thinking about it all over the past couple days, i think I ve decided that cutting or grinding away the inner lip is my safest option. I am too nervous about chipping the paint using the fender roller, and as suggested, the inner lip is doubled and quite rigid.

Now, how to make a nice clean cut is the question......any more suggetions? Thanks for all the replies so far!!

yes,,as i stated above if u have s.s. lip mouldings just follow them with an air body saw, thats what i did,  ,bought mine at harbor frieght/tool,,,10.00...if not i would use c-clamps on the lip to hold everything rigid while i cut away appx 3/4-1" in..mark in out and follow your line while cutting,,pretty straight forward..

Factory assembly tolerances would allow up to a .25" variation in some places, so yeah, most of these cars had considerable slop built into them from the factory. Add to the body tolerances all the suspension assembly tolerances and it is a wonder any of us could fit anything wider than a  235 on these cars. I can honestly say I have neverhad one of these old cars where everything was symetrical. Also relevent in some cases, modern replacement quarters come with a wider flange than the originals, so if your quarters have been replaced, you are easily giving up even more real estate.

thanks, now i dont feel so bad,,yeah the rear wheel lips were pretty jagged edged,,some spots were out as far as 1 1/4"..not now!!!there both equal to the s.s. mouldings.    :2thumbs:

No i dont have the lip mouldings on my car....but heres a thought that just came to me last night. Why not just swap rear end housings? The 68-70 b-body housing is 1.5" shorter than the ebody housing. would only need to move the spring perches and use shorter axles......this seems to be the best route for me to go.....may cost a bit more than i have to spend, i'm just not too keen on toying with the body at this point since its already painted and close to being on the road :burnout:

Perhaps i am overlooking something else here.....? :clueless:

mine was fresh from the body shop(painted and done) when i cut the inner lip..the rear end swap i understand will work,,welding involved,,still might have to cut lips too......
