Switching from 2 speed wipers to 3 speed wipers???
« on: May 24, 2013 - 01:55:12 AM »
I am trying to change my wiper motor from 2 speed to 3 speed. That being said I have a 73 barracuda. I found the information to convert it for 70-71 e-bodies and 71-74 b-bodies but didn't see anything listed for 72-74 e-bodies. I found that information here:

http://passion4mopars-moparbodystyles.blogspot.com/2010/05/mopar-2-speed-to-3-speed-wiper-motor.html

But my question is what do I need to convert to the 3 speed wipers on a 73 e-body? I already have the 3 speed/washer switch. That plugged right into the factory harness. So I was thinking I could just get the motor now and be done, but I was reading on these other applications that the arm and link needs to be replaced. So now I am doubting that... So the real question is, what exactly do I need to finish the conversion?

Thanks in advance for your time and advise!

:dogpile: Make sure you get the correct wiring pig-tail for the motor. They are different on three speed motors. Then make sure the dash wiring is correct. You said the switch just plugged right in but are all the terminals for a three speed switch there ? I have one of each type and both are disassembled so I will check the arms for any differences and post to you again before the day is done. However - - - -I'm fairly certain that they are the same. Think about it - they don't go any further, higher or wider - just faster.

I did this on my '70, and you're right, not much info for '73's. My guess is that mechanically the same things should apply - different crank on the motor and different link from the crank to the driver's side pivot.  When I was hunting for my '70 link I did come across some that looked the same but had a different part number. I assumed they were for '72 - '74 3 speed setups.

Yeah all the terminals are there on my dash harness for the switch even though the 2 speed switch didn't use all of them. I guess Chrysler figured why make another dash harness just for a change in wipers. One thing I did notice is that on the 2 speed wiper motor the output shaft rotates fixed location. Where the 3 speed motor output shaft moves like a lobe on a camshaft. That would be awesome if you could look to see if there is difference between the linkage for the 72-74! Also is it normal for the 3 speed motor to be a little noisy? I bench tested it and it ran continuously and return to park when wired correctly. But it definitely seemed a little noisy, almost like a clicking noise. Never had one so I'm not sure if this is normal or not?

Thanks Again to everyone for their help! It is greatly appreciated!

:To Mr. Cuda 360:
:banghead:Sorry about the delay. Just checked the two wiper system arms out for ya and there is a difference.
The three speed system has a different "short" arm. Both of my systems are dismantled and have been for quite a while so I can't be more specific in re driver side versus pass. side. Visually though - one arm is sorta "S" shaped and the other is more or less straight.
The "S" shaped or short one on the three speed system from my '71 B-cuda convertible has part # 2822 293 58622 and the "S"/short one from my '70 Gran Coupe is part 3 2822 291 58622. The last digit of the middle numbers differ's.
They only thing that might trip ya up now is that this info is from original '70 and '71 B-cudas but I doubt if it matters. Let me know if this helps because I have the Factory Parts Books and time permitting can check the numbers and diagrams. Lots of luck !!!!  P.S. The longer/straighter arms were identical in every way including the part number and I know both of my cars have their original parts.

Ok so I ended up downloading the parts catalog off line and figured out how to use it lol. So I found the part numbers for the crank and drive link to covert the 72-74 E-body to 3 speed wipers. These come right from the original parts catalog for E-bodies years 72-74:

Crank - Part# 3431 518
Drive Link - Part# 3431 514

Ended up picking them both up for 90 bucks on eBay. So I guess I didn't make out too bad...

Also since I was there I wrote down the 3 speed motor part numbers for 72-74 in case anyone wants them. These come right from the original parts catalog. The number for the switch is also listed below. Motors are as listed:

For 1972 Models:
Before September 1, 1971 - Part# 3431 534
After September 1, 1971 - Part# 3431 624

For 1973 Models:
Before February 1, 1973 - Part# 3431 624
After February 1, 1973 - Part# 3431 665

For 1974 Models:
All Models - Part# 3431 906

The switch is the same from 72-74. Part# 3621 670

Thank you all for your help! Hope this post helps someone!

Yeah I don't think it sounds normal... I got an a-body parts car that happens to have a 3 speed motor on it. I will test that out to compare the noise. Thanks for your input!
