air cleaner size question
« on: May 03, 2013 - 01:03:09 PM »
I picked up this K&N filter element the other day. I got it at a great price so just couldn`t pass on it.  It  is an E- 1290.  11"x 2".   I read it is a replacement for 5.2 magnum and other not too big engines. Made me wonder how to determine if this, or any other filter element, has enough flow capacity for a 440?
If this one is not gonna work on my engine, what are my options for a small filter unit?  I like seeing some carb....

i USE THE BIGGEST FILTER THAT WILL FIT  seems dumb to lose power over a small air filter , the filter top helps too

well, it has to look cool too!
:)

but basically in an E body, you don't got a lot of room, without modifying stuff.

thanks.  That`s a cool link.  I s that the same set up you used?  Where does the passenger side tube pick up air?
I understand why bigger is better but looking at the factory dual snorkle filterbox with 2 small openings, an open 11x2 looks like serious improvement...?
What`s a good way to check max clearance under the hood? I was thinking maybe dots of clay on top of the filterbox then close the hood  :dunno:  any better ways?

It's kinda funny when you see a big block engine with a little 6 inch diameter air filter.

Nice link, cudabob.

1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

Ya, as many here know, an engine is like a giant air pump, and anywhere you restrict airflow, whether
air filter or exhaust, or in between, you limit power. Heads are one of the big culprits!
