How to remove the steering wheel
« on: March 04, 2013 - 11:35:04 AM »
Hi,

My name is Paul and I own a Cuda '71 340ci and I unfortunatly broke the key in the cylinder key. I have to remove this latter and I would like to know, fisrt, how to remove the steering wheel. This is a wood grain one. My main concern is to unlock the nuts as per this photo.

Thanks

I guess that this topic has already been discussed... Sorry for that.

Paul

The center cap pops off and there are nuts under it that are removed and the wheel comes off very easy.  The issue is the crush can as you will need a puller to get that off . . . .

Don't forget the horn wire otherwise you pull it out of it's connector.

Yes pull the cap, then there will be I think 3 or 4 nuts to take the wheel off. Then go to your local napa or w/e and rent a pulling tool, you'll need to use it on the nut in the middle to remove the crush sleeve, you'll see it after you get the wheel off. From there I'm sure you can figure it out

Thanks. Excuse my lack of knowledge but I have much more background with the A Body  :grinno:

I have a Friend who has a pulling tool. I will have it next Thursday.

You'll need two pieces of 3/8 threaded rod to fit down inside the collar.
I've taught you everything you know.....but I haven't taught you everything I know !

Here's a pic of the 2 pieces apart. I carefully use a putty knife under the cap trying not to scratch the spokes.

I made a video of this on my Challenger some time back when I had to adjust a sloppy indicator stalk.

Excuse the music. I originally used a James Taylor song, but YouTube wiped it because of copyright. Now a random song is played each time instead.

Thanks Guys for your advises. I am waiting for the parts (Key cylinder & so on) that I ordered last Sunday.

Russ, I saw your video and this is very helpful.

I will keep you posted

Here is an update about the closed issue.

First, thanks a lot to all of you and mainly to Jason for his fantastic documentation that he forwaded to me.

After having changed the iginition key cylinder, I had to change the upper steering column bearing. It took me sometime to get it.

The fish is now back on the road  ;)
