found a crack in the short block...
« on: April 26, 2013 - 11:18:06 PM »
Starting to leak.

my mechanic found someone selling my choice 383 or 440 for $2500 then today he found a 440 for $2200 all rebuilt.

The issue is besides the short block everything on the engine is pretty much new and $2500 is alot of money to pay when all I need is the short block.

my dad is old school and he wants to just put jb weld lol and ride her until the wheels fall off

He is gonna keep looking for cheaper alternatives then the $2500 alternative.

any advice or if someone can point me into the direction of someone that deals shorr blocks

So what block we talking about here anyway?? 318?? 340?? 360?? Which one it is can determine which way you go in fixing it. If it's a 318 you could easily find a new block for cheap. If it's a 340 it will be cheaper to repair the existing block. Since you can see it and your Dad wants to put JB Weld on it I assume it's somewhere on the outside of the block. If the crack is not too bad and there is no indication of a more extensive problem, you can get it repaired as modern welding techniques now make it possible to weld cast iron. The hardest part will be that you will probably have to pull the engine (but not disassemble it) and take it to the welding shop so that they can work on it. Repair the crack, or worse case replace the block and either way it will be a lot cheaper than buying a whole new engine.
Cheers!

Only way to fix that is with a sleeve. I would first have the whole block magnafluxed, then make
sure the machinist is going to deck the block properly to make a good seal at the deck of the block. I
would be really suprised that any shop would sleeve, deck, and include the price of the sleeve for eighty bucks.
a good high nickel sleeve would cost me right around 35 bucks by itself. Hopefully a good move for ya.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

By the way, thats a bare block, not a short block. A short block consists of the block, crank, rods
and pistons. And usually a cam and timing chain.  Just a FYI

you will need to bore & sleeve that cylinder usually it will distort the bore beside it so check that out carefully

The guy who's going to fix that block for $80; is his name Goober by any chance? You can't make chicken salad with chicken $hit, no matter HOW much mayo you use, so either sleeve it and go through all the necessary machining (or you're wasting all those new parts you described) OR find another 440 block. They're not that scarce, that using that other boat anchor is worth it. But that's just my  :2cents:
