Reversed Cables on Jump Start - No Ralley Gauges
« on: May 13, 2013 - 06:10:29 PM »
Rough day.  Body shop drained battery on my 70 Dodge Challenger and proceeded to apply booster cables to start.  Problem is they installed the cables in reverse order.  Obvious problem was the blown fusible link.  Replaced the fusible link and vehicle now runs.  The fuel gauge, oil pressure gauge and temperature gauge are not working.  I am not sure where to start.  Any suggestions out there?  I have reviewed a few other posts but sense my problem today is a bit different than anything else out there already answered and I am reluctant to start tearing things apart if there is a simple solution.  Thanks for any responses.

Odds are the 5 volt limiter on the back of the gauges is fried. It converts the car's 12v to 5v for those 3 gauges. It's the only thing that is common to all 3.

Bummer!  I expect the diode in your alternator got fried as well.

I agree, probably regulator, but reversing the polarity on a bimetal strip shouldn't be a big deal, at least I wouldn't have thought it would be a big deal. Evidence suggests otherwise though.. unless of course it was replaced with an electronic one already.

Great suggestions.  Seems like the way to go is replace the limiter on the back side of the gauges.  Thanks for the suggestions and pointers to ebay.  Will be back in a few days with the results.
