Swapping polarity  on the pickup wires does a lot to how the ECU sees the AC style generated wave coming off of the magnetic pickup. It generates extra "triggers" that causes misfires that can break teeth off of your ring gear.

If you use a GM hei module as a spark box, it is even more sensitive.  Orange wire or gray wire on the pickup is always +.
