Well had time to do some tunning on it Sunday and made some good progress.

Started with timming (remembers to unhooj the vac this time) I decided to go old school to start with and just time it by ear first for highest idle. The thing wants 22 deg at high idle which seems huge, this gave me 35 at 4000, not sure where full advance comes in on a stock distributor. Well that didn't seem to make alot of diffrence other then the low end off idles was better.

Then I went to the chrome box and right away I could tell it was better when free reving it, really pepped it up. But taking it for a drive it was only marginally better, still the same problem.

So a little frusterated I let it sit cause it was to hot to work on and went and sprayed the law, ya fun. Well while waiting for the sprayer to fill the second time I decided to tear the hole shaker system off to get a better look at stuff. Well to my surprise I found that the air door on the read carb secondary was hitting the cross bar on the base plate when it was tightened down, just sitting the base plate on it didn't hit!!

So after some creative grinding I got clearance for it and went for another drive. That made a pretty huge difference as you would guess. Running much better now, I still think thier is some small fine tunning to do though.

My biggest problem now is that the factory tach seems that they are junk. Way too slow to respond and never give the same numbers. I have put the new electronics on the back of it that made it a little better but it is still flaky. Any way to get a GOOD stock tach?

Also I still have the 22 deg initial timming in it, it doesn't ping but I think I need to back that down.

Hmm no pinging & better response + it doesn't over advance with RPM  .... why back the timing off ?
Glad you made progress with it

22 initial seems high, and may be really challenging your starter and battery.
May be better to back off on initial, then change distributor curve so you still
get the same total advance of around 36, unless I'm forgetting something here?
