Slap Stik Shifter - Detent on Downshifts?
« on: June 03, 2013 - 02:20:22 AM »

Hey guys, been trying to make a Hurst Promatic fit in my Challenger and it's just too big. It "could" be made to fit, but would sit around 1-/2+" above the console top plate and looks, well, crap. The ONLY reason I'm going this way is because the aftermarket shifters have the detent on the up AND down shift. With our stock shifter, shifting up is fine, no risk of over-running.

However, when you shift down, the button must be pushed and when you're hooning around, heat of the moment, it is possible to over-shift and go back to first. Does anyone know of you can modify the stock Slap Stik mechanism so it has detents on the down shift, so you can bang it back to [2] from [D] and it won't over-run?

Carl, you can wind the inner push knob further on to the cable which will prevent the little tag from depressing far enough to go into 1st.
Downside is you won't be able to get 1st if you want to.
You may run into trouble picking up park so you might be able to file the sawtooth detent plate. Can't remember.I only came up with these ideas when adjusting mine.
Alternatively you could weld or pop rivet a plate to block out the 1st gear detent but once again you wouldn't be able to select 1st at all.
Just a few ideas to get you thinking.
Burnouts are cool but Traction is the Action

Thanks brother, I'm open to any and all ideas. I contacted Duncan Motorsports to see how his "Shift-R-Gate" works  but I'm sure it's just the same. Be nice to have a "ratchet" style shifter both up and down gears. I love to bang down and hear those rpms rise and pop a little, especially with exhaust cutouts haha plus it just comes in handy when driving around, corners, hills, etc. Makes it much more fun when you're not semi conscience about going all the way back to 1st.

Carl, it's not the answer you were looking for but a member here (quapman) sells the pistol grip shifter with the trigger on the front. I had the same problem with my 1970 style slapstick and after using his pistol grip setup I've not had a problem...yet :P Yes you still have to be carfull, cant just slap it like an upshift but sure makes it more fun not having to worry every time.

Thanks mate! I already have the tilt pistol grip shifter (below) and was one of the first to get back in 2006/2007 and it's the non trigger one. Unfortunately, that's just the gear engage action and doesn't have anything to do with the shift plate shift style but I appreciate your input anyhow bud.  :)

I hear ya and agree with you and wasnt expecting anything either with the unit, was just suprised by how much more positive it clicks nito the lower gear without skipping past. But good luck just the same because I like to shift up and down manualy myself...keep us posted. :burnout:

Thanks bud! I'm running the stock shifter setup again and will get the car running and see what it's like all fresh. It's been a while since I've driven it so it might not be as bad as I think in my head. You're right, with the pistol grip it makes it easier to handle, more precise.
