How to tighten passenger side mirror (70 cuda)
« on: June 12, 2013 - 03:20:56 PM »
My mirror flops around. I took the assembly out of the housing and then did a search on here on how to fix it. I found several threads where people ask the same but the responses all said to look at other threads that explain it. I can't find the threads that detail exactly what to do.

What I have figured out is that I need to remove the mirror glass in order to tighten a screw. Is that correct and if so, how do you safely remove the glass ?  :clueless:

I have tried using a hair dryer as had been suggested.  Broke the glass anyway. I
Have also heard that soaking in acetone will loosen up the glue. Leave to soak overnight.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Wouldn't acetone mess up the paint on backside of mirror ?

Yes it would, but your picture shows the inside workings of the mirror. No paint there. Or is
that not the mirror you're referring to? If it is, soak it inside a metal pan.

I was referring to the paint that turns a piece of glass into a mirror. :D

Wouldn't the acetone mess it up ? The holes on each side of the assembly shows the backside of the mirror.

Good question. I haven't tried that method, just read about it.   :dunno:
Maybe someone else will read this and have a better answer.

Here's whats behind the mirror after its broken. :(
As you can see there's a metal plate that is held with flattened spuds (don't know wtf to call them)

Here's a close up....

I had noticed that I could press down on the metal strap on each end so I set it on my bench and took a hammer and tapped on each of the spuds.
The mirror is now tight and the local glass shop used an old mirror and cut out the shape I needed and didn't even charge anything because it was a scrap piece of mirror.
