flimsy fender dent
« on: July 01, 2013 - 04:35:34 PM »
So my passenger side fender has a spot where if you lean on it it will dent in, then you can reach in behind and pop it back out.  Its gotten to the point where it happens too much and it seems the metal is starting to weaken a bit or wants to stay dented instead of straight more often. Its also becoming a bit wavy.

Can this be fixed with or with out removing the fender or requiring a repaint?

that's called " oil canning "
only way to repair it properly is shrink the material.
hard to do without ruinin the finish.
try applying some dry ice to the affected area on the inside.
or....
you can epoxy some extra material to overencompass the area and add stability.

or...

just don't lean on the car!!!

"oilcanning"  Yes that's exactly it.

Ok, so to properly shrink the metal I assume you heat it up, thus ruining the paint?   I may do a respray this winter so maybe a good opportunity to do that.

Can you just do it with a torch? How hot does it need to get?

Propane torch and cold water method or shrinking disc. I haven`t tried the shrinking disc but here`s a video-
