stopped by a local yard sale just to browse around.  Sellers signs read tools, equipment, autos,  so what the hey  stop and look around.  He had several paint sprayers, ( commercial painter selling off and getting out of the business), A 5 ton dump truck with plow and salt spreader, Kawasaki quad 4, new Holland skid loader and a nice looking 91 turbo firebird.   Looking through the small items, I spy a tank or R-12,  hmmmmmm, pick it up and feels like about 3 pounds in it,  How much I ask,  10 bucks,  well,   I didn't even hesitate. @ to 3 pounds of r12, I may not ever use it but I have it.  So, anyone local cooling with r12 and needs a little shot,   I got it.

 I go to yard sales looking for R12, have never found any, I use it, imo the best for these old cars.

Good find with the R12, at least you can find the odd can over there, we here down under have had it out right banned, go to jail almost if caught with it or using it. There never was a problem with it, it was all about money and now they are trying to get rid of its replacement. Every time they replace the refrigerant gases it costs us and it is less efficient than the previous one.

R12 IS the good stuff and it's hard to find, as mentioned. I've heard that the scrap metal guys sometimes have a bunch of it which they suck down from the old fridges that they get- usually for free. Worth a look if you've tried all the other sources.

Had a mate in the car air conditioning trade and he made a special fitting that clamped on the pipe, then punctured it, and then sucked it into a bottle.
Somebody notified the authorities what he was doing, fortunately he had just gotten rid of a couple of fridges that he had emptied and the R12 wasn't in his workshop at the time. He got an official warning and basically stopped doing it. he sold the business a few months later anyway.

Good find my friend, you never know what is in someones garage, as I always say in which I stopped in at one once about 5-6 years ago & spyed a 68-70 Charger Road Runner dash cluster sitting on a top shelf in the back of the garage, so I just had to ask. She went & got her husband & he came out & said If you can use it or find someone that can, its yours for $10. Needless to say, a $10 bill was put in his hand rather fast.

I think it's funny that you can't use it, but you can let the fridge rot and dump its freon into the atmosphere.

Actually here in Australia you have to pay to have the R12 taken out before you can dispose of old fridges, normally it would be free to dispose of such items. Many are therefore just dumped to rot as you say.

I see individual cans (12-14 ounce) of R12 on Ebay motors for about $35 to $40 dollars per can. Most of the listings have a caveat that you must provide a copy of an EPA license to purchase. My mother-in-laws car is a '93 and has R12. It is a little low and needs a charge. I want to keep it R12 because it cools much better and is more efficient than R134, but may have to convert to R134 out of convenience. Good find at the yard sale! You never know what you might find!
