Engine stalls when I put it in gear? Adjustment?
« on: October 29, 2011 - 11:46:41 AM »
Given up again.

I've set the idle running in park/N to approx 1000rpm when cold, which rises to 1200 when hot. Runs without problem.

But when I put it in Drive the rpm drops to ca 6-700rpm for couple of seconds then it stalls. Does it all the time when it's cold, and is very annoying at intersections.

Is there an adjustment for this? Any thoughts on what I can do?

How high should idle rmp be?

Is initial timing adjusted? We had the same problem with a friend's 440 with comp huge cam and double edelbrocks - we recurved the dizzy and voila - 28 initial and 36 total and now it doesnt stall in D and idles at 1000 (N) and 700 (D).

Also check for obvious - vacuum leaks.

You may have a problem with the stall converter , if it is stock with a long duration cam . often you need a 2200 rpm stall or higher .
You may also need to add small holes in the primary throttle plates to allow the throttle to close but still allow more air in , start with approx 3/32 drill bit .
Also restricting the idle bleed orifice is often helpful , not sure what carb you have though , on a Holley type carb if you look into the carb throat you will see 4 small brass insert on the front wall of the primaries & rear wall of the secondaries , try inserting a small diameter wire into the holes & see if ti idles better , you can leave the wire in place , I recommend bending the wire into a [ shape , inserting it into both bleeds & trapping it behind the squirter

the red is circling the idle bleeds
Blue is the jet bleeds , on HP series Holleys & Proform / Quick Fuel carbs  these are threaded & removable

I had one to where the brake booster was so bad that when you put your foot on the brake and put it in gear the vacuum leak killed the engine!  :horse:

I know that this is an old post but here is my 2 cents. I had the same problem...finally adjusted the accelerator pump (Holley Carbs) and it works fine.
