Best valve spring compressor/tool?
« on: June 28, 2013 - 11:37:05 PM »
Gearing up for an a cam swap...  small block Mopar....  My worry?  Swapping the valve springs w/heads installed.

So there is this Proform 67460 Valve Spring Compressor:

http://www.jegs.com/i/Proform/778/67460/10002/-1

but worried about interference around power brake booster and master cyl.

And this style Comp Cams 5606:

http://www.jegs.com/i/Comp+Cams/249/5606/10002/-1

but worried about it being a piece of junk, clunky, and slooooooowwwwww.

I thought about buying both...?

Opinions?

Using the hook and twist compressor may cause damage (small nicks) to the spring but it's quick and easy. I used one for years but have broken several springs down the road, can't say if it's related or not.

I decided to make a lever type out of an old rocker arm welded it to a rod. Cut a large flat washers in half and weld to the sides of the rocker to press on the retainer. It's a two person job to use it though, one to hold the arm down and the other to remove/replace the clips.

Either way you will need an air hose adapter to charge the cylinders during the operation.

Mancini has the best on engine compressor I have used , it bolts to the rocker shaft stands & has tis own shaft , you just rock it down to compress the springs

No clearance worries to getting this tool on the driver's side back valve springs with the master cyl and booster? Or do you think will they need to be pulled?

It was mentioned, but don't forget to run the piston up to TDC on each cylinder AND make or buy an air fitting to screw in the plug hole to hook an air line to, while changing the springs. Dropping a valve into the cylinder will NOT make you happy.  :2cents:

Or fill the cylinder with nylon rope through the spark plug hole and wind the piston up.

Thanks all...  I think I have my plan together thanks to jvike.  I'm going to set the drill press across the lifter valley and press away.... checking to see if it fits under the hood today.

lol

No prices at http://drcraceproducts.com/catalog.html ???  But I'd be willing to go this route if the price is right in relation to the Proform model of the same design.
