Modern donar car to build GTX?
« on: July 25, 2013 - 10:15:08 PM »
My friend has offered me this B-body for a great deal with out engine, transmission and rear-end.
I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion on a donor car or truck that would be inexpensive to get the correct drivetrain out of?
I would like to get it back on the street for around 3k if possible.

Thanks!

I'd like to say a hemi ram, but making it all work for ur budget is slim, cheaper to do a late 90s ram motor and trans.

Modern car? What like a newer Chally or Charger?  :clueless: Too small a budget IMHO
70 Chally R/T Convertible- Yes she's really got a HEMI, no she's not a Charger!

Yeah, I know it is a very slim budget. I just don't want it to cost me my marriage :)

A truck may be the way to go

They make a great intake manifold for those trucks that's almost like a single plane, uses same TB and everything, but good for like 40hp, been years since I looked at them, but I'm sure they still exist lol

why a donor car?  I`d get me an engine / trans combo and rear for a B.   :dunno:

are you in Ojai, CA?  if so, i'm from Pismo beach, I might be able to put you in touch with some mopar people near the coast that can help you put together a complete drivetrain

Yes, you guys are correct. I need to just find a donor car in a salvage yard. That is the way to go.

moparman82 thanks for the offer. I will see where the project takes me and let you know.

For 3k I don't think there is a way to get a efi motor going unless its a 360 truck motor or something like that. Why not just Craig's list a motor for 1500 find a trans and rear it will be over 3k I imagine

I would check the salvage yards where they store vehicle that have been in accidents , often you can bid on them & get them very cheap

With approx. 30% of the late model wrecks being on a trip out of the country (and still remnants of the C4C ) trust BIGS here NOTHING IS CHEAP.

Granted cheap is a perspective. My cheap and your cheap could be aways apart. But here's an example 3 weeks ago at TRA https://www.traauctions.com/TRAPortal/traportal.aspx#page=Home;view=InitialState

There was an '09 Chally V6/Automatic car.... Not one straight panel on the car, not one!.  Sold $3600 Add on buy fee/gate fee/towing... your in the park for $4100-$4200 I'm guessing you'd want a HEMI not a V6. Ok then lets go a little older - a 6.1 HEMI from an '06 (In my area) $6-7K. 5.7 w low miles $3200 and up. Hi miles 2600 and up. Lets back it down... '04 ram1500 5.7 .. maybe as low as 1500... but way over 100K miles...  An older 360 may be your best bet if you wanna keep things under 3K. Don't forget all the incidentals, those add up really quick!  Best of luck on the project!
