Dash light wiring
« on: July 24, 2013 - 08:59:48 AM »
Question on the wiring set-up for the dash lights in a 74 Challenger. The power supply wire goes into a small round, sealed, black dodad. One wire comes out of the same end the power wire goes in and goes to one light. Three wires come out of the other end and go to the other three lights. Is that small round black dodad just a wire connector or does it also serve some other purpose also?

the black doodaad is just a connector , but I think you have it plugged into the wrong place , the connector from the lights should plug into an Orange tri plug to the right of the dash face , the orange circuit controls all the interior dash lighting radio heat controls etc & dims through the dimmer roller switch .

This wiring is not exactly OEM. There is a black wire with a barrel connector that supplies power to an orange wire coming out of the connector (likely the original power supply wire). Dimmer switch doesn't work so we have it jumped. All was working well until we changed the dash pad. Seems to be a grounding issue.

Polished up the points that I thought the light panel would make contact to ground it and I now have dash lights. Guess I'll keep the car. :grinyes:

If the dash lights stop working again, I'll give you a hundred bucks to take it off your hands. I'll come pick it up. No need to ship. :grinyes:
