Digital Calendars - Want One?
« on: July 28, 2013 - 10:11:08 AM »
Judy and I have been talking about the option of having a digital calendar, and we'd like to get member input.

Originally, the idea was to make the calendar available for international members so they can save the exorbitant cost of shipping. That being said, if they're available to international members, it only makes sense to make them available to everyone.

If you wanted a printed calendar from a digital copy, you'd have to print your own. Generally this would mean going to a print shop. If you have a photo printer and photo paper, you could print something pretty close to the "official" version. If you print on regular paper, the results will probably not be very good.

So, ask questions, make comments, and vote in the poll.

You could just put it out as a PSD file and it could be printed just about anywhere. Maybe do both, have a printed and a PSD as different orders.

I'll let Judy confirm this, but I think she was thinking PDF, because it would lock in the size and resolution. I've had professional print shops decide to change my pre-flighted fine art prints to fit whatever paper they had a surplus of, so there are very few that I trust.

I think a PDF file is the best way to go if we move towards a digital file for the calendars. We have been going over the pros and cons and want to do what would be best for c-c members and the images they would provide for the calendar. As Dave said, we're really looking for some input as far as how everyone feels about whether a digital calendar should be available.

The only drawback I can see to having a digital version is that you might sell fewer hard copies. That could make determining how many to print a problem, unless you don’t print them until the orders come in. You could sell the PDF files as a simple download, once it is made there is nothing else to do but sell the download information.

I really like the print calendar and don't want the hassle of having to find a print shop and get it printed, etc.  But I also understand that doing all the printing and shipping (especially to other countries) is quite a bit of work for the calendar team,

The work involved in producing the calendar was not the reason for considering a digital version. I actually don't see it as work. Just like when you all work on your cars and you step back and what a great feeling to say "I did this".

We are just trying to see if there is the interest in a digital version, whether it would even be feasible and keep the price for the printed version affordable.

Wal-Greens drug stores print calendars 11 x 8.5 for 19.99.
I don't know what international stores there are that could receive the photo's
to print a calendar. It might be worth looking into.
Judy, Dave would send the photo's info input to a photo store. They would create the calendar
per discription for CC member to purchase. My  :2cents:
