Relay question...Hopefully an easy one!
« on: August 10, 2013 - 08:07:34 PM »
So... went out to fire up the 'Cuda this morning and NOTHIN'!  Thought maybe I had left the door open or something and drained the batt.  I then tried jump starting with my SUV... NOTHIN... not a click ...SILENCE...like there was no battery in the car.  So I disconnected the terminals and hooked up my Battery Tender Plus and charged the battery.  Went out to start her tonight after getting the green light from the Battery Tender and ...NOTHIN...SILENCE.  Checked connections and look ok.  No rot at all.

Could this be a bad relay??  Not sure if a fried relay would cause this kind of result.

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Thanks for the help guys!!!

See if other accessories work (headlights, hazzards, interior light etc) If they work then the batt and cables SHOULD be fine.  By your sig you have a 4spd?  The solenoid mounted to the inner fender should have a ground connect built in to it.  The solenoid needs good ground to your inner fender to work.  If someone stuck a automatic solenoid in there, they would have had to run a ground wire from the neutral safety terminal to ground.  If that's good, check the + terminal connectors on the solenoid and the starter.  Check to make sure the starter is bolted solid to the tranny (I've had one come off).    If all that checks out nice and tight, then tap the solenoid and starter with something non metalic (screwdriver handle etc) and see if a little "percussive maintenance" does the trick.
Yes I own a 1972 Dodge Challenger Convertible T/A S/E with a 440 Six Pak. Can it get any more wrong?

if you short the 2 large terminals on the relay & the starter works the relay or power to it or the ground to the trans is not connected .
if there is power ground or the starter doesn't work when the terminals are shorted then the starter may be bad
