Oil Pump Drive Support Bush
« on: August 14, 2013 - 08:43:19 AM »
I was checking an article on rebuilding my small block and it said that I have to use a special tool to size the bush once I have knocked it into place. I have always been told to just tap it with a drift and hammer into place, I have never replaced one before as the shafts have always been quite tight and not needing replacing. I can see how the tool works and why, similar to sizing K line valve guides, so is it necessary?   :working:

  Thanks in advance.

I had one where the oil pump drive was very tight in the bushing after it was installed.  I assume this is what they are talking about.  If the pump drive slides into the bushing without binding, then I think you should be ok. Someone with more experience should confirm this.

usually once the bushing is installed the bushings is too tight for the drive to slide into it so the only choice is to burnish it open again

Thanks to both of you for your quick response, C.P. I got that from the article so I suppose if I have to replace the bush, I do have a new one, I will have to address "burnishing" the bush. Either find a tool (make one, buy or borrow), it said not to ream out the bush as it will not hold properly in the block without burnishing.   :2thumbs:
