Newbie from Sothern Indiana
« on: August 16, 2013 - 11:56:19 AM »
So, I've peeked in here from time to time, but recently decided it was time to really get going on my 71 Chally convertible, so I thought it was time to actually become a member.

A little about my story:  Around 1981, when I was about 11 years old, I was riding my bike through our neighborhood in Indianapolis, when I saw a Challenger Convertible.  Coming from a MOPAR family, I immediately went home and told my dad.  He told me to ask if it was for sale the next time I rode by.  I did and the owner told me that "No, it's not for sale.  I'm going to put a battery and clutch in it and start driving it again".  So, I left.  a year later, and not having moved, I asked again.  this time the car was showing signs of cancer, and the top had a tennis ball sized hole in it.  Nevertheless, the answer was the same "I'm going to put a clutch in it and start driving it again".  So, another year goes by, and now the rust is considerable, the top is practically gone, and I made one more run at the car.  this time he old me he should probably sell it.  I ran home and told dad, who went to the guys house and negotiated a $250.00 purchase.  We loaded up the car and took it to Illinois and put it in a barn on our farm for later.
About this time I fell in love with a '57 Chevy and that became my project car.  I worked on it all through high school and put it away when I went to college.  About the time I was graduating, Dad was amassing parts to finish the Challenger.  The drive train was restored, and dad finally drove the car to a body shop in Illinois.  The body shop put in the floor and the trunk floor pans, and started disassembling the rest.  Then, dad died unexpectedly at the age of 48.  Mom wasn't sure what she was going to do for money, so the project was halted and I had the body shop spray it with a heavy coat of primer, before taking it back to the barn.
At this point I was starting my own family, and didn't really even want to look at the car because of the memories it brought back.  However, time heals all wounds, and eventually I decided to try and finish the car for my dad.  I went and got it, and brought it home.  It has still taken me awhile to get around to it, as I've been busy with kids, but the time has finally come.  Unfortunately the car is in pretty bad shape, and is going to need even more than I thought.  That's where you guys will come in.  I will post pictures soon, but I promise some of the images are graphic and disturbing.  I really wish the guy would have sold the car the first time I asked.

Welcome to the site. Very cool story. I've never seen your car but I bet it can be resurrected, I don't care how bad it is. It will just take time, patience, a little know how and of course some cash. You'll get plenty of encouragement and guidance here on the site. Let's see some pics.

Welcome to the site.  Great story about your determination to get that car.  Your dad would be proud to know that you still have it and want to complete the project.

So here's the first picture I took of her after bringing her home from Illinois, about 10 years ago (not much different than today).  She's a 71 numbers matching 340 with a 4speed.  She was originally, and hope to be again, Autumn Bronze Metallic.  If the picture works, I will attach more later.

BTW, I was under the car for the first time in a long time the other day, and almost cried.  There is rust everywhere, and there is at least one spot is through the frame rail.  I might very well be biting off more than I can chew here.

340, 4 speed '71 ragtop. How cool is that!!! That is a diamond in the rough if I have ever seen one. That car absolutely needs to be brought back to life. Don't let the rust discourage you. Frame rails can be fixed or even replaced. Believe me because I've replaced 3 frame rails in my own 71 ragtop. It won't happen over night and you will probably get burned out and may need to take a break at times but you can do it. I just looked up the production figures for your car. There were only 291  340- 4 speed Challenger convertibles built in 1971. Good luck and keep us up to date on your progress.

Have you ever welded and/or fabricated metal before?
No biggie if you haven't. I didn't know either a few years ago.
We can walk you thru that part when you get to that.

Do you have the build sheet and tags for it?

Ya gotta save it!   :2cents:

Some questions asked and answered:

Sprecks  -  How did you support the body while switching the rails?  Also, why did you have to switch 3?  Different cars    I  hope?  Finally, where did you get your production numbers?  I have a little red book around here somewhere that showed 176 71 340 ragtops, but it didn't breakdown the transmission.  I would love to have good detailed info.

Topcat     -  Nope, never fabricated, and the only welding that I've really done probably belongs on the Hacker thread.  I know this isn't the car for me to cut my teeth on.  It deserves better.  I haven't found a build sheet yet, but I have/had the fender tag.  It was in tough shape, so I took it out to clean it up and decode it.  Then I put it somewhere safe.  Then I moved, and it's been awhile since I've seen it, but I'm pretty confident it's still around here.  At any rate, I have the worksheets I was using when I decoded it.

Hey, check out this PERFECT dash pad in a convertible that almost rotted away and has spent several years in dusty and musty barns!

I truly believe you can have the heart, desire, and determination to do it!
But you got to believe in yourself first.

I've been in your shoes before. Felt overwhelmed, no knowledge of fabricating or body work.

I'm not a prodigy or genius by any means. I'm just hard headed.

Trust me when I say..."We will walk you thru it." Just ask what you don't understand or don't know and we'll help you through. Welding is nothing more than heat and pattern.

Fabbing can be done using cardboard as templates. I watched alot of TV car re build shows, websites and YouTubes to teach myself. Then went and practiced. Somtimes early it wasn't so pretty. Then one day you say to yourself.... :thinkerg: "I got it."

The thing is when you do everything yourself; you are now a soul inside the car.
"I really built this car" are the best words you can ever say to yourself or anyone.

Mike, Fremont, CA.

Mike is right and that's a nicely set up car to cut your teeth on. Think of your Dad and start slowly. You can use jack stands to support the rockers when you're cutting out that punky rail. You can also weld in 3/4" tubing diagonally in the door openings to tie the old gal together while you do it. It's kinda like carpentry- measure twice and cut once. Good luck and welcome to the site!
