Are later-style Challenger bumpers wider than early style? If the bumper mounts are modified to pull the bumpers in closer to the body (like the early style bumpers) will the ends stick out on the left and right?

No, they aren't wider. I had a 73 bumper on the back of mine for a season and the only modification you had to make was with where the bumper brackets met the frame. One whole was off on each side.
