'72 'cuda Seat Belts
« on: August 06, 2013 - 11:32:03 AM »
I just bought a '72 'cuda.  Safety first before tackling other projects.  There are no rear seat belts and only cheap "Made in China" lap belts up front, the passenger side doesn't even latch.  I would like shoulder belts up front and lap belts in the back.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

If you want "mandatory" shoulder belts in the front you'll have to either go with an aftermarket set-up...Lots on EBay, or look for factory 1974 Cuda/Challenger belts, involves cutting your rear interior panels and I'm not certain about the anchor points.

If you want "optional" shoulder belts in the front...any year Cuda/challenger up to 73 will work. You can get real nice new reproductions of the 70 or 71 belts, but they are all made in China.

What's the difference between "mandatory" and "optional".
BTW I don't care about "correct" or OEM.  I just want something that looks good and works well.
I heard of a company called WESCO that makes belts.  Any advice on the size belts to order from them?
Also, why would I have to cut panels to install belts?

74 is the only year that came with retractable shoulder belts.  The retractors were located behind the rear interior panels.  The shoulder belt came through slots in the interior panels, up through anchors on the roof and down to the lap belt.  All other years had a separate shoulder belt that could be attached to the lap belt...but you didn't have to attach it if you didn't want to.  The shoulder belt was then wrapped up above the side window on two brackets attached to the roof.

OK, would the WESCO belts bolt in place or would I have to do some kind of modification?  It looks like I will have to cut into the headliner to get to the anchor point for the shoulder belt.  Any help on the size belts to order from WESCO?

Don't know anything about WESCO belts sorry.

I had a customer supply these belts for his 71 Charger....He wanted "mandatory" shoulder belts. http://www.ebay.com/itm/70-73-Mopar-E-Body-3-Point-Seat-Belt-Front-Pair-/350756759163?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A1970%7CModel%3ACuda&hash=item51aabb667b&vxp=mtr#ht_1294wt_798 So I installed them for him.

These bolt up to the factory locations, but aren't really the nicest looking belts... :2cents:

I am looking at putting these in my cuda in the near future.  I read about it on a thread here on C-C.com.  I dont remember who has them, but said the work and look good.  Cheap too.  Your call
