There has been a rattle in my 72 steering column that was slowly getting worst.  It's proximity appears right near the key ignition.  Now, I can barely turn the key, only after jiggling it and the wheel again and again until it finally works.

Are these related?
I am about to dig into the steering column.  Any tips or suggestions.  The key ignition barrel is cheap.  Not sure what else can be rattling down in there.

Thanks

Hard to say if it is related , sounds like the key is worn or the cap holding the springs has let go so the pins are not pushed down on the pins in the lock

Thanks.

Is it best to take the whole column out to repair it?

I would take the wheel and hub off first. You'll probably see whats wrong once its off. Why go through the extra work if you don't have to.
