Alternator fitment issue???
« on: August 25, 2013 - 11:12:33 AM »
I am putting together a '72 Challenger 340 w/ A/C for a friend. I received the rolling chassis with all of the parts in boxes. The owner bought new Edelbrock aluminum heads for the engine and they are installed on it now. I am trying to put together the front of the motor with all of the accessories and I have run into a problem.

The alternator he gave me to use is a reman one, part number P7509, I believe it was bought at Advance Auto Parts. When I put the pivot bolt through the brackets and the alternator, I believe it is supposed to swing down far enough to reach the bottom bracket with the slotted hole that is attached to the water pump bolt. The problem I am having is the back of the alternator hits the head and it will not swivel down even close to where I need it to be.

Are there different alternators for the e-bodys that have a narrower case than the others? Is there a chance this is the wrong alternator?

I am not sure what to do at this point.  :clueless:

Thanks!

Jeff

you can still get re-popped or reconditioned roundbacks I am sure one of those would fit. Someone was selling them in an ebay store.

Chryco, I think it would fit better like that but I have never seen any like that. If I put the front ear in front of the bracket, there is going to be a big gap between the rear alternator ear and the rear bracket. The bolt I have is long enough but is there an additional spacer that goes there?

Thanks!

Jeff

Like grancuda1970 said you need a round back with Eddie. heads, I had the same problem with those heads on my 340.

Are there certain years/models/engine sizes that the "roundbacks" came on? Just wondering how to find one in an auto parts store.

I think the change to the square back alt was around 72.  Anything before that should have a round back.

Is the one above in Katfish's car a square back? That looks very close to the Alternator I currently have that will not work. If I hold a tape measure level over the case, from the front of the case to the back of the case it measures about 4 3/4" any idea what the round back case should measure?

Thanks!

If you want to get it local, just ask for an alternator for a 70 year.  When you get it, look at it.  If its roundback, then take it.  It does make taking it back much easier.  Go online with your local auto parts store like Oreillys, Autozone, Advance Auto, NAPA and look it up.  They have pics of the alternators, and they are around $50.

Okay, thanks guys! The owner had an old round back alternator and sure enough it just clears the head.  :bananasmi

In the pic below, is this the correct slotted bracket for the 340 With A/C for the alt?  I have seen some of them that are long enough so that both bolt holes can be used to secure the tension of the fan belts with this bracket.  I have dropped the alternator down to where it hit the top edge of the fuel pump but the bracket will only reach the closest bolt hole in the alt.

Second question, where does the top "V" bracket go? It has a captive nut at the bottom of the V.

Thanks!
