GC emblems

Fellow GC owners!

My -70 will be back from the body / paint shop within 1-2 weeks. Have heard that since May but.. its close now.
Awaiting that, i am polishing and freshening up moldings and emblems. I am fortunate to have all GC specific emblems with the car and i have 2 questions regarding exterior emblems (see pic).

1) My fender emblems are chromed but most i have seen are painted blue and red. Are there 2 versions or has the previous owner had the paint removed?
2) My trunk lock emblem is kind of discolored in the plastic (resin?). Anyone successfully restored this one? If so, how?

They all originally had a resin component.  There are re-pops out there, but the resin that is used turns yellow with age.  i have seen some folks clean the originals after the resin has been removed (or popped off by age), paint them the appropriate colors of red & blue, and then use a non-yellowing resin.  I have yet to do that myself.  i have a set of re-pops that turned yellw that i didn't use, and was thinking if trying the process out on them.

The trunk emblem used to be re-popped, but that was some years ago.  i have not seen one lately.  mine was decent enough to use, but i would like to find, or restore one, that is better than what i have. the surround outside of the shield gets painted argent to blen in with the tail panel.

There are two versions of the fender emblem. One for 70 (has posts on the back for the fender), and the 71 that is a stick on (goes on the door).

My pleasure!  We like to see Gran Coupes restored, and not just cloned.  I get a lot of comments on having a GC!  You have to post some pics as your project progresses!  What color & engine combo are you going with?  I kept mine the same as the factory color & interior, but somebody already had droppedin a 440 in place of the 318, so i decided not to complain about that! So it is restored like it would have come that way from the factory. i did add a set of hockey stick stripes, and a rear spoiler for a sportier look.

Question...that "Flying Lady" hood emblem you show on your picture looks real pretty!!!  Do you know where we can get one???

Did she come with the car or was she an aftermarket mod???  Way to go (kaa-ching)!!!

 

In 1992 (after 7 years of owning my car) I did a "Frame Off" (K Frame that is) full rotisserie restoration and I bought my repo emblems from Year One.  They are the resin type that were identical to the ones I removed.  The car lives in the garage and has only 5,000 miles on it since the resto but my emblems have not yellowed.

Anyhoo...Ive been stalled out on finding a way to remount my GC rocker moldings.  When I bought the car in 1985 it had one molding on the drivers side and the one on the pax side was missing in action.  Nobody would notice except the holes were visible on the pax side.  I very vaguely remember that the clips that held the drivers side moldings were some kind of metal ones that were rusted and broke when I popped off the molding.

Now reinstalling the moldings is the last step in my restoration (Ive been blowing re-installing them for almost 18 years now) so the question is do you have any pics of the clips used to re-mount the rocker panels?  I figure I should mount them before the car is ready for another restoration.

I got a pic of the clips somwheres I'll look. I just used screws since the clips are hard to find. EB3 made some modded neat clips that work.

I looked at my trunk lid repo emblem and it is starting to yellow.  It never really fully closed good.  If there is a repo Ill get a new one.

The link to the Bing images shows the plastic clip that i "reverse engineered". i looked for metal clips, and could not find any.  the original metal clops can only be used once, and usually snap off during removal.  The plastic ones seem to be working fine so far.  They are a generic clip; i just don'r remember the part number.

Your color combo will look nice! my first GC was that very same set-up; it's the one "that got away". keep up the good work!

Thanks, read the thread on your plastic clip and that will surely work. However, my moldings have screw holes in them already so that kind of messes it up. Anyway, i will solve it in one way or another.
Saw on Ebay one guy selling GC moldings, a bargain on only 999.99 US....

$999 Rip-off alert!!!  usually they go for $200-$250 for a really nice set.  they are out there for a decent price, you just have to keep watching.  good luck!
