Fuel tank vent tube assembly help
« on: February 26, 2012 - 04:59:38 PM »
I'm putting in a fuel tank and have got to the vent tubes... I bought a Mild steel fuel tank vent line kit for 1970 Barracudas and 1970 Challenger models without the vent tube on the filler neck and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on how all these tubes fit in with the tank and the hole in trunk pan.  The link for the kit I bought is below.

Thank you in Advance.

Okay your gas tank should have a single vent nipple protruding out of the passenger side of the tank.  This is what the vent assembly connects too.  In the trunk, on the passenger side truck extension, just behind the fender well, should be a hole.  The long curved portion of the tube extends up along the outside of the center seam of the fender well.  The two tubes of this curved piece then pass through the seal which sits on top of the fender extension.  If you look at your passenger side frame rail, opposite the vent tube in the gas tank, you will see a rectangular hole. Both tubes go inside this hole.  The longer portion goes all the way through and connects with flexible gas line to the vent tube on the gas tank.  The shorter tube exits inside the frame rail where any gas vapors condense/vent.  Remember this was back in the days before smog control.  I've attached several pics of my car.  The hole in the extension is not the stock shape as we used new extensions and cut the hole ourselves.   Also, the vent tube assembly is just sitting in position as I haven't purchased a new one yet and just set my old one in position so you could see how it goes.  Hope this helps.  Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks raptor.  My gas tank doesn't have a vent nipple on the passenger side, it vents from the fuel line/sender plate.  Your pics have given me some good ideas on what to do with it though!

I have a question on the subject...

My cuda had the same grommets in the trunkfloor, so I suppose it had the same vent set up as shown above. However, the vent lines were long gone and it has a fueltank with the 4 nipples. They were connected with each other by 2 pieces of fuel hose, so basicly no vent system on that set up.
I did use the same tank again since it was in really good shape. Now... what would be the way to go?  can I use one of the 4 nipples to make the factory vent set up work, and block off the other 3?  What will happen if I go back to the way it was done, with the 4 nipples blocked?   :clueless: :feedback:

the 1/4 tube on your sender is the fuel return not a vent,  if you have no side vent nipple then you should have vent nipples on the front.

Dutch, when I purchased my 'Cuda the fuel tank had four vent tubes as the original fuel tank had been replaced with a later year tank due to a rear end accident.  Three of the four nipples had been blocked off and the the vent tube connected to the one remaining nipple.   Can't speak for how it worked as the car was not running when I purchased it, but it looked like it had been that way for some time so I'm assuming it ran okay.  Hope this helps.

Thanks Dave.  I'll check again for the fuel tank nipple, maybe I just missed it.

Ok I checked for a nipple on my gas tank and it has none.  Car was originally an ECS car but original gas tank was rusty and bent so I bought a new one from YO.  So I suppose my only choice is to go without vent tubes and cover the hole in the trunk.  Anyone have any other ideas?  Will the car run ok without vent tubes?

I have recently replaced my tank with a non-1970 model (My car is a 1970) and there is no vent tube on the tank itself. There is however- a set of two tubes on the sending unit (I know the larger one is the fuel line). The filler neck also has a small nipple on its underside and I believe we may have run the line from the top of the filler neck (behind the fender) to that smaller nipple on the sending unit. I think this may be wrong.
Should I simply have the tube from the filler neck hang down behind the fender/ chassis as overflow? The existing gas cap is already a vented cap.

Thanks

Are there always vent nipples on the tank? I don't see 1 anywhere on my tank.
There's no nipple on the filler tube either.

Seems like I have a set of mismatched pieces with no venting?
