1970 Cuda hurst shifter bezel
« on: October 06, 2013 - 01:46:19 AM »
Hey guys I got a question about this dang bezel that is on my pistol grip shifter. I bought a new hurst shifter kit and for the life of me i cant seem to figure out how to remove the chrome bezel that sits atop the actual shifter. I think Im having a derp moment as it looks like it should slide right off but after smacking it with a hammer i cant seem to remove it.....Ideas?

under the plastic lens the bezel is peened onto the handle , why do you need to remove it ?

The new bezel came with the kit and the old one looks like a dog turd. But thats not the reason why I want to remove it. When Im driving and Im about 4,000 rpm the bezel and plastic lens rattles really bad.

I'm not sure this will solve your problem, but I bought a Hurst shifter handle to go on my five speed and wanted to put a 5 speed lens on it instead of the 4 speed lens that came on it.  I found a thread on here that told me how to do it, but I can’t seem to find it now.  I drilled a hold in the lens and screwed a sheet metal screw into the hole. This will either break the lens and you can flip out the pieces with a pocket knife, or you can just pull the screw with some pliers to remove the lens if it doesn’t break. Put a drop of glue in the bezel before you push in the new lens and that should secure it.  My guess is that the lens is rattling instead of the bezel, but can’t be sure that is the problem.

Replacing the bezel is a whole different story. As Chryco said, it is peened on.

I used some silicone under the lens to secure it.You will probably have to break the old one to get it off.I have done 3 of the kits and this works well. When you put the new lens on be careful not to push to hard because you will break it.With the silicone it will not rattle.
