Turn any 1970-1974 into AAR clone?
« on: October 01, 2013 - 07:25:44 PM »
Hey all,
I've always loved old Mopars; the 1970 AAR is my all time dream muscle car.  Some day soon I will be able to afford a Cuda, but not a real AAR.  I would like to update some parts and wouldn't want a numbers matching car anyway.  I was wondering how common the body panels are year to year.  I know how the AAR hood and grille are different, but are there other major parts that are different?  I though I might have a lot more options if I could turn a 74 into an AAR with the right parts.

Thanks for any input,
Ryan

If you are thinking of making an AAR re-creation . . . It would be smart to start with a 70 car!   Then at least the markers, tail lights and other things will match!

Gotcha. That is the sort of thing I am trying to find out.  There's no point in buying a car for less if conversion to make it accurate for an AAR will cost just as much and be less trouble.  Thanks for the info!

 :iagree:

Alot of small details the 70' E bodies had that 71'-74' were different.

Regardless of options, engine, etc.

And there are plenty 70 barracuda's to be had that have lost their fender tag and build sheet.

If you start with a 70 you will only really need to change the hood and a few other small items.

If you go with a 72-74, you are looking at changing front fenders, front grill, hood, rear tail light panel, all corner turn lights will need a different hole, etc. etc. etc.

That many changes, huh?  Well, thanks; that's what I needed to know.  Now I need to keep an eye on the yards for a nice 6.1 Hemi...

Yeah definitely start with a 70'. If you are planning on throwing in a 6.1, I would try to find a good roller.

I'm working on it. So far a hybrid.. Hemi with AAR look. AARmi......Originally 318. Upgraded leaf springs, torsionbars, torsion boxes, rear axle to match the 426 currently in the engine bay. Not sure what the original AAR suspension setup was. New floors and a lot of other details. An still a lot to do.. Would have liked sidepipes, but Norwegian authorities are not fond of noise... Still exterior work to do. Paint is not good.

All depends on how exact you want the "clone".  The main difference of the AAR is the engine and hood/spoiler and stripes.
99% of the public couldn't tell the difference between the different years.

So if it doesn't bother you, I'm sure you could find a complete 72-74 for less than 1/2 of what you'll pay top get the 70 in that condition.
Just add the hood, spoiler and stripes and your done.

All depends on what you're looking to accomplish, exact re-creation or an affordable driver that turns heads.
