Scarebird front brake adapters
« on: April 08, 2005 - 08:00:07 PM »
:stomp: I bought the Scarebird front brake adapter thinking I could find an inexpensive way to upgrade to front disc brakes on my 72 Challenger. All went well to begin with, got the adapter plate in, picked up a pair of 300M rotors, and a pair of 68 GTO calipers (loaded). Removed both bearing hubs from my 10" front drum brakes, and removed the wheel studs. The directions state that I need to "find" replacement studs that are approximately 1/4" longer to compensate for the addition of the rotors...easier said than done. :pissed:

If anyone gets a chance, look in the various catalogs (Year One, Jim's, Laysons etc) under wheel studs and see all the various combinations of studs.....Anyway, my run of bad luck continues since I have two different wheel bearing hubs, one is a Motor Wheel (see pic), and the other is a Kelsey Hays (see pic).

The Kelsey Hays requires a wheel stud with a .625 knurl outside diameter, and the Motor Wheel needs .650". Numerous emails with Mark Jarvis at Scarebird turned up a good NAPA part number for the Kelsey Hays (641-1112). This has the correct length (approx 2") knurl and shoulder height. Unfortunately, there appears to be nothing for the Motor Wheel hub. :gripe:

Bottom line appears to be, if you have the Kelsey Hays front hubs, the NAPA part number listed above will work fine, but if you have Motor Wheel hubs, you're pretty much out of luck if you are considering the Scarebird front brake adapter. Was considering the Scarebird rear brake adapter, but am going to order the Wilwood kit instead.

I placed a "want ad" looking for one Kelsey Hays front hub, so if anyone knows where I can get one please let me know. :worship:

I am doing the same conversion on my cuda  right at this moment and I dont see any problem there are a plethera of studs availabe if you are willing to work with something other than a drop in Dorman- Pioneer- US Wheel- even Moroso have studs that can work. Fact I bought some last week that were .680 for the rear of my car. they can be turned down or your hub opened up. They were 1/2 x 20 thread and i saw in the catalog from 2" to 4" ...I got 3". But it would be a lot cheaper to by drag studs and have a machine shop turn them down to the size you want than to cough up $400 more bucks for Willwoods ...might cost ya $40-50 plus the studs

Well Outlaw, I am sure that Mark at Scarebird will be happy to know that he has such a big fan. I however believe the adds and installation instructions regarding the adapter are a bit misleading. The way I interpret "replace them with 1/4" longer studs" is that I should be expected to carry the old ones down to an auto parts store, and walk out with the correct studs. Most auto parts stores carry 8-10 drawers with wheel studs, so I figured that part of the process wouldnt be too difficult. That actually is the case if the front hub is a Kelsey Hays, but not so with a Motor Wheel. Even Scarebird admits the Motor Wheel bearing hub will not work with their adapter, and that there is such a mess with finding correct wheel studs to use with their kit, that they are trying to come up with a generic bearing hub assembly to overcome this issue. (if you'd like, I can forward you his emails) Now granted, anything can be made to work (McGyver and his trusty Swiss Army knife proved that)...it just depends on how much time, effort, money and energy you are willing to put into it. To me, any value gained by using this adapter was lost with having to do quite a bit of R & D for this company just to try and get their adapter to work. Atleast now, Scarebird has a good NAPA part number for a wheel stud that will work with the Kelsey Hays adapter...I wish it were as simple for the Motor Wheel.

As far as money goes, by the time you add up the 300M rotors, GTO calipers and core charge, bearings, seals, hoses, adapter plate and tack on an arbitrary figure of say $10.00 per hour trying to find a way to make it work.....to me anyway, it is just not worth it. Then it comes to resale value, you can either say you have a front disc brake setup from a known and respected company like Wilwood, or SSBC....or you can explain how the brakes are cobbled together using parts from numerous other vehicles.

I agree with you that the hub /stud  situation is a mess, but most things with Ma Mopar are that way. Plus (at least locally) no one stocks anything for a mopar. I guess thats why a small setback like the studs didnt bother me, I am so used to hunting parts for mopars that it just seemed like one more trip for parts for me.We joke about the fact that nobody stocks moparts and the books the parts houses use are as dependable as trying to drive a Yugo to  the moon. As for the Scarerbird situation these problems are no worse than the problems I have heard about Wilwood. I dont know about the cost of parts for your conversion as mine takes different rotors and calipers and after all is said and done I have less than $200 in the whole conversion. But then again I knew going into this that it wasnot a drop in and go conversion. I researched and talked to Marc several times before I ordered. All things said I guess its just a difference  of perspective, I dont mind a little extra parts chasing to save $400.
