My 383 Magnum came factory with a carter I thought the difference was the cam

I don't believe that the carb made a difference, holley or carter. I've seen them both on N-code cars; that was just a supply issue.  The specs of the cam is what makes the difference.

Yes, the cam was different, but there was also a change in the heads. The 906 heads (which were used on 440's as well) were "upgraded" with stiffer valve springs and had dampers. But I do believe that all of the 383 engine that came with Holley's were rated at 335 HP (5200 rpm) (there could be some with Carters).......... Notice the list below had the 69 383 (Carter) at 335hp 5200rpm (10-1 cr), the 70 383 with the Holley 335hp 5200 (9.5-1).......  and you had to have dual exhaust.......
The 300hp ratings were at 5000rpm.....      then again, a lot of people will say the engines were "underated" for insurance purposes....
