727 knob adjustment.........???
« on: October 28, 2013 - 04:42:37 PM »
I can't get the tranny to go into 1st manually......I push down on the button and it will only go to 2nd.  I tried to adjust the knob outward one turn and the button flies off........spring too.  I know there is a flat spot for the allen to set on and I think I can get the knob to hold if I rotate 1/2 turn but that just isn't right.......Are the threads in the plastic button worn to the point that I have lost the adjustment ability?   I know this must sound simple to most folks and it does to me too BUT.....why is it most of the simple things that create the most havac.  ?? :pullinghair: :pullinghair:

Yup , you either need to helicoil the knob or replace it to get the adjustment back , crappy design from the factory

Try taking the knob off completely to see if the shifter is going through the whole shifter range. This will tell you for certain that the shifter is not at fault. And i agree with CP, a fix would be to replace or helicoil it. :2thumbs:

I had to buy another black push button just for that reason.

One day, the old one, flew up like a rocket while my top was down. Thank God I was stopped at a light and it landed on the back seat. I still keep the original (& an allen key) in the glove box, just in case.

once you release the allen screw locking it in place the whole assy rotates , the outer ball & the inner black knob , the more you tread it on the les the rod is depressed by the black button so you have to thread it on far enough to hold the botton on but not so far you cannot depress the button enough to get below the detent

I just dug through my pile, found a 70 shifter and knob. It's used but yours if you can use it? It's all black?( the push button) threads look intact?  PM me your name and address and I'll pop it in the mail for you?
