Fixing rear window channel and quarter to roof seams
« on: October 30, 2013 - 12:51:08 AM »
Looking for some advice on fixing the rear window channel. It has a few pin holes. Would it be better to fill them with weld or do a patch?

Also what about the quarter to roof seams? They are of course cracked on both sides and have been bondoed by one of the previous owners. I don't exactly know how bad as I haven't sand blasted the car yet. What is everyone doing to fix that problem? I figured I would weld them and use flat bar and weld that as well and then a thin layer of a filler?

What is everyone's favorite product for filler these days?

If it only has some pin holes, I would take a flat piece of copper and keep it under the pinholes and weld the holes shut with a mig. The copper helps to transfer some heat and also works as a "mold"  under the hole so the filling does not become unwanted enlarging so easily.

I had to make some patches to the quarter to roof seam and then applied some lead to fill up the deepest areas and a light coat of filler on top of it.

I cannot comment on the filler because we most likely have different filler brands here in Finland than in US. I did try out about 5 different brands and the best for me was brand called "Autoseal" or something like that. I also used fiberglass reinforced filler on some areas that needed bit heavier coat and are subject to vibrations etc.

I just fixed the passenger side of the rear window channel.  Mine had some rust pitting and the corner had a few that went through.  I just cut it out with my air saw right to the edge where it rolls into a flat area.  If you cut it out, you never have to worry about it again.

:iagree:  He's right; if there's pinholes now, there'll be pinholes later. As for the 1/4 seams, the factory used solder for a reason and it's still the best way to go. The reason for the cracks is the flexing, so a set of subframe connectors would go a long ways toward fixing that. Just my  :2cents:
