Suggestions on Camshaft 440 Sixpack with Edelbrock heads.
« on: November 16, 2013 - 03:56:47 PM »
With winter coming and all the toys put away I'm making engine plans for next spring.

I want to get one of my 440 engines out of storage and get it ready to install in my Challenger.

I bought this engine a number of years ago and have waited for the right time to use it.

It has very little run time, the person I bought it from sold it to build a stroker for his street/strip car.

Nothing really exotic, standard .30 over 440 with KB Hyper pistons.

Heads are slightly ported Edelbrocks.

Calculated compression right around 10 1/2

Will have stock Sixpack intake with Promax jetted outboard carbs.

Car is a street driven 4 speed R/T Challenger, 1 7/8" Hooker headers full 2 1/2" exhaust

Hemi 4 speed, 3.73 rear gear.

Back when I bought the cam I had maximum performance in mind, now I wanting more drivability but still would like a strong running car.

Car will be street driven 95% of the time, possibly to some car shows an hour or so away with an occasional trip to the track.

I bought this new Straightline solid cam a few years ago for the engine but now I'm thinking it's too much cam for my mostly street driving application.

I prefer solid cams so maybe a milder one would work better for my application.

I have both 1.5 and 1.6 rockers available.

So here's the current cam's specifications....

Any suggestions on something milder that will still work well with the better flowing heads?

Thanks. :thumb:

I would use the cam you have , with advertised duration in the 270-280 rane & duration @ 50 in the 250* range it should work great

don't think you are supposed to use 1.6 rockers on a 440

careful of valve to piston clearance

I think its desirable to have more lift on the exhaust.

I have a similar cam spec wise, a solid roller, and the intake lift
is .600, while exhaust is .625.

Your duration is near the max for a 10.5 CR engine.

My engine is 10.5 CR, with duration 254/258 at .050.  which is the max duration Crower told me to have.

72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

Similar to my Lunati except my valve lift is 0.586 and exhaust CL is 112. Good cam and runs in my 451 from 2300 to around 7000.

I'm using Harland 1.6 roller rockers on my 440, you just have to ensure you have adequate P2V clearance.

Again, they are perfectly fine as long as you plan for them.

I wouldn't say the common person should be building a motor with them unless the necessary precautions are taken.

1.6 rockers are an easy way to add lift as long as you do your homework and checks while installing.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

looks like with the small increase in duration and lift, that the money is better spent
on a new cam.

Looks like a good cam to me.  I would certainly use it.  Glad to see someone that likes solid lifter cams....should be just right with your combo

Good cam discussions, and discussion about the importance of matching
compression ratio with cam duration. Too much duration will lower
engine power output. First article is bike stuff, but still applicable for the most part.
