Break In Oil Question
« on: December 21, 2013 - 06:14:16 PM »
Hi guys,

I am about to install the 340 back in my car after about 2 years of not running. It was rebuilt prior and ran great with about 500 miles on the rebuilt engine.

Since it's been sitting for a couple of years I figured it couldn't hurt to start it up with some break in oil. Which I have already purchased the Royal Purple break in oil. What do you guys think? Am I going to do any damage I'm just trying to minimize any issues.

Thanks
Dave

Definitely won't do any damage, but there's no need for it at this point. Just prime the oil pump to minimize
the dry start up.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

I agree , cannot hurt & most oils do not have enough Zddp to keep the cam alive

I'd get the oil pump going with an attachment and variable speed drill, get pressure up, then
rotate the engine about 30 degrees by hand, and bring pressure up again, until work it through all
360 degrees. I'd also have a low viscosity synthetic in there.

also, squirt a little oil into the spark plug holes before starting. Some folks recommend Marvel Mystery Oil.
Put some in the cylinders before rotating the crank, so it will spread onto the cylinder walls.  Also, crank easier
to rotate without plugs installed.
