new high torque mini starter sugguestion?340.
« on: November 01, 2013 - 08:55:58 PM »
My old original starter went in my 1970 cuda block 340 4 speed with hedman headers. Old one can come out by removing tie rod off knuckle. I have seen some posts about using modern dodge truck starters for 440's. I would like to know what starter should i get for my application? As in a HIGH torque MINI starter that i can get with relative ease. Motor is a 416 stroker.

Personally I hit the wreckers & grab one from a V8 truck or van for $25 or so & replace the contacts for another $5

Bought one today fitted right in started right up i could definitely hear the higher torque in the starter. cost me 55 dollars with a advanced auto parts discount :) Happy! I dont understand why guys say to remove the old one you have to remove the headers....i undid the tie rod and sway bar. two nuts and it came out.

The steering column can be retracted onto the seat and to rest the wheel. Then the older type starter can be pulled up and out. It depends on the car. One more thing, on the 340 LA and old 1 5/8" headers that only fit old starters, due to the pipe hitting the new position of the mini starter.          Yup, I had to buy a newer style header to use the starter. I needed the mini starter to clear the SFI, 3 bolt pattern flexplate with a larger O.D.     The SFI Flexplate will interfere with the bendex gear on the large starter in a small 998 trans. Plus I had to beat a dent into the wide oil pan flare to clear the new header. What a pain, just to upgrade a 998 trans. flexplate to a solid  SFI- 5/16" bolt hole, for an 11" 2800 rpm converter. Just Saying!!
