rebuilding / restoring correct dated alternator
« on: October 10, 2013 - 11:33:22 PM »
Well, seeing how my wife might be laid off from her job, I started thinking about what I could do to start bringing in some extra cash for my family. Working on my Dad's GTX alternator that I located the correct dated parts for, I figured why not start doing rebuilding of alternators and starters on the side. I have learned a ton about the differences between the square backs and round backs as well as the 2 year only ones for 1970 and 1971 round backs. Anyway, here are some pics of what I started with and what I have achieved so far.

Thanks, I take pride in EVERYTHING I do.  Be it a project around the house, working on my daily driver, or even a simple quick detailing of our antique cars.  Lets face it, how many times have you gotten a rebuilt part of out a box from a big chain supplier like say, A1 Cardone or some other name only to have it die a couple months after you installed it.   I know I have.  Granted, those parts typically have a lifetime warranty or whatever they promote, but how much time and money do you waste running back and forth to the auto parts stores swapping out the alternator, starter, water pump, etc.  Personally, my time is too valuable as I could be spending it with my kids, wife, and other family memebers or cooking a steak on my grille

What I am offering is a service that focus' on quality, not quantity of how many alternators, starters, etc I can rebuild.  I guess you can say it is similar to fixing up an old car.  Anyone can do it but the ones that stand out the best are the ones who pay the most attention to the details!

Looks great! Good luck in your endeavour.

:iagree: Lot of competition in that market.

Hard part is finding quality cores to rebuild with the correct casting numbers and stamped numbers etc...
I've taught you everything you know.....but I haven't taught you everything I know !

Thanks for the good wishes.  I understand that there are other places that do this but some do not offer the stampings on the diodes and other places just sand blast the housings which ruin the original finish.  I also understand that not everyone wants a concours restored alternator but are looking for a quality service that will last which is why I would be open to various forms of the restoration.  Lets face it, not all of our cars out there are trailer queens or show boats.  This will cater to no only the high end crowd but also the average Joe who wants to have a nice product on their car if they desire to pop the hood at a local cruise night or car show.

Anyway, here is some more progress.

Hi Richard,

Thank you for the compliments.  I am located in Northern NJ.  I will send you a PM / email regarding pricing and also what kind of things you might want done.  Options such as having the original appearing end bearing, diodes stamped, etc.

I am happy to say that you are not the first customer (sorry) , but one of the first five. :sadwavey:  which is good for me I guess.   :clapping:   :smilielol: :2thumbs:

Brian

Thanks for the info on what is included with your restoration. Im thinking you might want to post something up in the companies/Vendors section and detail your process. It sounds great and most important the attention to detail. I want my car to look like it did the day it rolled of the line and I think you can help with that.

Thanks for the suggestion Richard.  I still have to make up an outline of what will be done with say certain levels of restoration.  I also still have to pull one of my spare alternators and rebuild that so I have some pics of how that will look before and after too.

Hi Mike,

Got your pm.  Will give you a call in the next day or two.  My daughters third birthday is today and I get off of work at 7 pm.  Friends and family will be over tonight when I get home so I doubt that I will be able to give you a call tonight.
