70 Challenger A66
« on: December 30, 2013 - 12:07:14 AM »
I'm not sure about this, but I think I need to start looking into the reality of selling my car. It is a 70 A66 car with a 4 speed. It is not numbers matching. The engine is date code correct. The trans is new from Passon Performance. I have the original numbers matching gear box that is currently disassembled. The rear end is an original e body Dana 60 with 4.10 gears, again not original to the car, but valuable none the less. I have an overhaul kit and the ring and pinion for 3.54 ratio. The engine is recently rebuilt. Probably less than 2000 miles on it. Virgin block that only had to go .020" over, square decked to 9.588, KB replacement 340 dome pistons. Original forged crank, Eagle I beam rods. Eddy open chamber heads to accommodate the 340 dome piston. Static compression somewhere in the 10:1 area. Lunati voodoo cam. I can't remember the grind number off the top of my head, but I have all of the paperwork for the complete build both from the machine shop and from the work I did. Comp Cams roller rockers. Fuel is delivered through a Mopar performance six-pak intake and the correct vacuum actuated carbs. I have an original 340 six-pak intake. I have a new center carb on the engine, but have all three original carbs. I have a driveline vibration that I believe is the trans yoke worn, but am not for sure. Driveshaft was rebuilt when I installed the trans. Front seats have been re-done with legendary components. Frames and springs were cleaned and powder coated before re-upholster. All new foam, burlap and piping was used. New seat tracks purchased from Roseville Moparts. The rest of the interior is however, 43 years old and needs restoration. I have a rimblow wheel in restorable condition on the car now plus the original wheel as well. The car is originally B5 blue and still is, but been painted about 5 times. Car is originally a vinyl top car with the stripe delete. Vinyl top was removed at some point, but holes were just bondo'd over. Car has never been wrecked from what I can tell but the hood is not original to the car. All vin stampings are present plus data plate. Deck lid needs to be replaced but useable and the usual places has rust but it's not a rust bucket. Has 15x7 rallys on now and I also have a set of steelies that were on it when I bought it. R/T emblems were put on by previous owner, but are stick ons.
I know I should be telling you what I want for it but in all honesty, I don't know what it would be worth. My gut tells me it should be worth somewhere around $15,000 but my gut has been wrong before. So what do you guys think?
Let me end this by saying I haven't completely decided to sell it yet. I've owned it for 23 years and one reason after another never got to restore it. I'm 51 now with a daughter about to go to college and can't see how I will ever be able to get it done. I love the car and it is a complete blast to drive, but reality is thumping me pretty hard lately. Anyway, what's it worth to you?
Thanks.
Kevin

Sorry, I forgot to say the car is in the Boise, ID area.

Seems like a neat car.  Hard to say what it's worth for one photo, but the one you did post looks good.  Do you have any other photos you can share?

Thanks!  :2thumbs:
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

These cars are never worth 1/2 of what we put in them.  I'd keep it if you can.  I still regret selling my 71 Vette, and that was 20yrs ago.
My car is in about the same shape, I'd say 15k is about right.

Here are some more pictures of the car and the motor during the build. I will have to wait for the weather to break here before I want to get it out of the garage and take pictures of anything specific. She is going to need lower quarters, trunk floor, drop off's. Lower fender patches and a small drivers floor patch, probably no bigger than a foot square. The drivers door has some rust down in the front lower corner. I don't think it is too bad but you know how that rust likes to hide. I already mentioned the deck lid. I am wanting to get the AMD deck lid here soon, but have to get past the Christmas expenses.

Cool car!   :2thumbs:

Thanks Cody.  I thought it was a real R/T when I bought it, but it doesn't matter to me anymore. The fun meter reads the same.

No, I wouldn't have been. Sorry.

Actually to update, after lengthy discussion with the wife, We are going to keep the car even if I can't restore it. We are going to try to halt the deterioration, but that may be all that it gets. If things change in our favor later, we'll look at getting it done then. So I'm going to just enjoy driving it even if it isn't pretty. Thanks to all of you who've "been down that road" and offered the perspective of the end result/regret. Cheers

Good thing it's not a 72-74 or it would only be worth 1/3.

Good decision Kevin.  I think you would of regretted selling it down the road.  Let's swap out those rear end gears  and get get it more cruiser freindly.  Would of hated to break up our little trio of E-bodies  at the shows.

A '70 A66 Challenger in B5 is what I was trying to find. Ended up with a '70 R/T Challenger in Plum but now am spending about $20,000-$30,000 to get it redone in B5 with a Passon manual tranny. Really wish you had tried to sell it 4mths ago ;)

Hang on to it!

Thanks everybody. I knew I'd regret it, but I kept telling myself that it was the responsible/mature thing to do. So I guess I'm just going to have to stay irresponsible and immature. :grinyes:

Doug, Matt: got my trans slip yoke the other day. Hopefully that is the vibration I can't seem to find. Now we just have to get rid of this crappy weather. I'm ready for spring. :burnout:
