6.1 Hemi Conversion A/C adding questions.
« on: April 15, 2012 - 07:17:48 PM »
We are installing a 6.1 hemi in our 74 Challenger. Has anyone added A/C? The car is originally not with A/C and I am trying to figure out what I need to piece together to get it all going. Im hoping that someone has done this or at least put enough thought into it to get me started in the right direction.

I have one and it's a nice kit, but don't have the AC lines hooked up yet.  I bought the kit without the compressor and instead bought a compressor from a 5.7 hemi car from a recycling yard for cheap.  Mine is a semi-custom install.  The Vintage air kit is meant to go through the hole where the factory blower motor was, but I'm trying to hide the lines.  Anyway you can check out install pictures in my thread (page 21):

I put a  6.1 in  my challenger.  I used the stock a/c compressor.  You have to knotch the frame and cut the  back  mount off the compressor to make it work but it will.   I used  a  2006  Dodge Charger  condensor ..it mounted  great in front of the  radiator.  Had  to make  small modifications to the  radiator support but it is obvious what needs to be  done when you do this.

This  allowed me to use the  2006  hemi  a/c  lines also... I  trashed the  huge 70  ac  can under the dash and went with the classic auto air one...some mods to hook up the evap.....I have photos....  email me pilotusmc@aol.com

I just used the front engine accessory kit from BPE , The compressor mounts on the drivers side with no interference . http://www.bpeusa.com/61LHemiFKIT.asp

I am using the  Vintage AUTO  AIR  system....using  my stock compressor from the 6.1 hemi.....stock  2006  Dodge Charger  condensor....The  condensor  fits  great in front of the  radiator with minor mods to the radiator support...looks  nice....I have the hoses from the  2006  charger  and a local company here  made me  custom hoses using the ends form my stock hoses....have not fired it up yet but  looks great
