Distributor Opinion Requested
« on: August 19, 2002 - 11:03:27 PM »
First, thanks to all of you for the great forum with lots of information... you guys have a great thing going here!  I'd like to get your opinion on some distributor choices.  I have a slightly modified 383 in an R/T Challenger.  medium lift cam, Edelbrock 750 performer setup.  I currently have the stock distributor with after market coil and wires.  I ALSO have a used Mallory dual-points vacuum advance distributor on the shelf.  I have seen a lot of MSD set ups, and have received great reports from their owners on the performance of electronic ignitions...  I priced the MSD Pro-Billet Dist and MSD 6A ignition controller setup at about $400.   if you were in this situation, would you upgrade to the Mallory and if so, what additional steps/purchases would be required to convert to electronic ignition ... or would you go ahead and move up to the MSD setup?  thanks for your advice!  -LM

I guess it depends on your budget ???
The dual point is not really an Upgrade , points are not great at best , you can piece together an electronic Mopar ign from the wreckers for cheap or buy a new system from Mopar & they work well or you can go to the Multi Spark systems , Holley , Mallory , & Crane all make digital systems for around $200us , MSD makes an old style analog system for around $200us or a digital new style for just over $300us

i put a full msd in my car and its been my favorite mod to date.  it made an amazing difference in my car.  she ran 110% better.  i couldnt feel any performance differences, but starting and driving all went much smoother.  to be fair i would say that my old ignition was pretty crusty and old so that probably accounted for the big difference in my car that others may not notice as much, but i am a fan of msd.

Thanks for the quick replies!  I'll look around for a while to see who has the best prices...  Will probably go with the Digital 6 Plus,  the Pro-billet Dist for the 383 and a blaster 3 coil (unless that square blaster coil turns out to be better.)  One other question-  Vacuum advance vs Mechanical advance... I will only be using it for Friday/Saturday cruise in's and some shows... not a daily driver...but would like to be able to stomp a camaro if he's not quite respectful at a red light.   ;D  Any comments on your recommendation appreciated.  Ross- I just saw your parking lot rampage.  still laughing in awe and disbelief!  -LM
