How to not break seat stop bumper ?
« on: January 03, 2014 - 02:25:24 PM »
I got my replacement seat stop bumpers. How do you get them to fit over the studs without breaking them ? I was going to put them into hot water before trying to press them on, but thought I'd check here first.

I just did this a few weeks ago. I held the stud with ViceGrips, heated it "warm" with a torch and slip it right it. It did melt the plastic a bit, but it's not coming off again. :2cents:

I had bought new repop seat stop bumpers many months ago, and had not yet installed them. I did not realize that the stud's integral washer needed to go "inside" the nylon/plastic piece.  Well, I just did mine today.  Here are the steps I used to get the studs in:  I boiled the nylon/plastic pieces in a small pot of water for a few minutes, then took them out to the garage; opened the vice jaws slightly wider than the width of the threaded stud; placed the nylon piece on top of the vice jaws; put the stud through the hole, and using a large phillips screw driver (in the head of the stud) and a hammer, I pounder the stud into the nylon piece.  It went in without much effort, and spins freely inside.  No damage to the nylon/plastic piece, or the stud.  Thanks go to Racer57 for starting this topic, and to the members who replied with advice.

Is it the OEM design?

It doesn't look OEM to me, but then again, my buckets seat backs just had a bolt screwed in, instead of the correct type screw and nylon stop/bumper (another lazy and cheesy job done by the previous owner).  Here is a photo of the stop that nearly everyone sells as OEM replacement.

Interesting.  I assumed that the nylon bumper/stop with the phillips head large washer screw was how they were originally.  Too bad the style (in Topcat's photo) is not reproduced, but the ones I bought are definitely better than just a bolt.
