Driveshaft Output yoke: How far out should it be?

Last week I had a driveshaft made.

I took the measurement of 47"
That was the length from the very tip of the tailshaft end to the edge of the input yoke on the Dana.

He made me a driveshaft put it was too long.
I sent him this picture.

Last night he came over to see for himself.
He said the U joint needs to be close and that the dust seal  can be the 1" tolorance.

My question:
How far out did the output yoke sit out of the tailshaft while the rear end is on jackstands?

Mine has about 1/4" more shiny surface showing behind the dust seal rear edge. I have Passon's 5 speed now but I believe the Passon A833 hemi OD I had in previously was the same shiny surface amount. If the rough piece of the yoke rubs against the dust seal, when the rear end travels up/down, you are not going to have a dust seal for long as it will chew that thing out

I would normally have the weight sitting on the axle bottom out the slip yoke then take off 3/4" to 1".  never had a problem works for me

Have you got full weight on the back of the car and the car sitting on stands, the diff travels up and down, as it travels their is a point when it is eactly in line with the gearbox as that is when it will be at its closest in just the standard arch travel, then you have to consider when the car is under load with engine and diff movement, the diff will travel forward a considerable amount in fact, so you are best off pushing the yoke as far in as possible, the car sitting on full weight, take the measurement from center yoke on box to center yoke on diff and then take off 1 1/2" to come up with final length.
