Just got my new 451 all buttoned up and ready to fire soon and when I went to install the dizzy and the new bronze gear drive it won't seat?
Muscle Motors supplied the oil pump?  It won't go down far enough to engage the cam gear?
Any idea's?

Never mind I got it. It just needed a little persuasion with a screw driver and a hammer. Just a few small taps and in it went!  :2thumbs:

You might want to pull it out and double check the gear for wear/damage from tapping it in.  I don't think it should require any other tools to insert, so I would be concerned that something is not right.

I didn't hit it very hard , I could have done the same thing by hitting the screw driver with my  palm of my hand a couple of time then it slid into position?.

You would know better than I would.  If you have any doubts, you know how it easy it is to pull it and double check.  Just a thought.

one thing u may want to do is radious the top of the cam gear teeth to help prevent bronze gear wear,,i had to use a drimel tool with the small round stone on the roller cam that was in my hemi to prevent gear wear,,the cam manf wont do this final machining.cant sell bronze gears if they do..u just have to barely touch the tops of the teeth to stop it,,then your expensive bronze gear will last a lot longer...........

b-4 i did this the cam was like a lumberjack whittling a piece of wood...

:2thumbs: Ya I noticed  that and radius-ed  both the top and the bottom with a needle file before I installed it. It was razor sharp all around the gear teeth.  Took about an hour! LOL

Edit... I re-read your post , I thought you meant the dizzy gear, thats what I deburred not the cam. Too late for that it's all assembled already. :grinno:

FYI, Crane Cams makes a coated steel dist gear for use with billet cams. No more worrying about bronze gears not lasting. The Crane guy answered a question on Moparts about their durability by saying that they had been selling them to chebbie and ford guys for a decade now. They are about $100. Jeg's sells them, as probably Summit as well. Only ONE thing! You cannot use them on a cam that has previously had a bronze gear run on it.

First I have heard of this. Thanks for the information!  :2thumbs:
http://www.jegs.com/i/Crane+Cams/271/66970-1/10002/-1

My problem is how do they last? Sure the manufacturer is going to say they are the greatest thing since sliced bread but ....?  I can afford to experiment , better the devil you know sort of a thing?  :dunno: Last thing I want is it to eat the cam shaft and spread shrapnel through my new engine? I can't afford to build it twice?

From Crane.....

Crane Cams now offers precision machined, specially coated and processed steel
distributor gears for popular engines using either cast flat faced lifter or steel roller
camshafts. Since roller lifter cams are made from either induction hardened steel
or carburized steel, neither of these materials are compatible with the normal
stock distributor gears. In the past, “bronze” distributor gears were used. For street
applications these gears can wear at a high rate and may have to be replaced on
a regular basis.
By using modern heat treating and manufacturing processes, Crane Cams has developed
a series of steel distributor gears that are compatible with standard cast cams and
induction hardened and carburized steel roller cams. Crane Cams now makes it possible
to use a steel distributor gear that provides OEM-style life-span, eliminating the need to frequently replace bronze alloy
gears. These Crane steel gears are available for most popular engines for both stock and aftermarket distributors.
The use of these gears on camshafts that have been previously run with other types or materials of gears, or the unnecessary
use of high volume/high pressure oil pumps, can be severely detrimental to the life of the camshaft gear.
Note: The “Shaft Diameter” dimension referred to is the portion of the distributor shaft, or intermediate shaft, that the gear
registers on. It may be necessary to remove the original gear to measure the shaft diameter correctly.

In an effort to get some real world feedback about the crane gear I started a post asking about it over on Moparts? Call me chicken... but I can afford to be the guinea pig on this one? I'm leaning towards " better the devil you know", but lets see what kind of comments come back?

Hi Brad, just read the reply from Moparts. Bummer deal? Who would have guessed? You DO have machine shop abilities, though? Maybe PM Andy F and get his take on the gear? The Crane guy did say the have been selling the same type gear to Ford and Chevy guys for over a decade, maybe check out some of their forums? If it was a bad gear, it would be all over their websites. The bronze is supposed to last about 3 oil changes, or 10,000 miles, but you could still run the risk of driving to long before changing. I think Comp Cams makes a "plastic" type composition gear, but only for Ford and Chevy.

The thread that I was refering to on Moparts is called "Crane Cams does it again!" Might do a search on that. I don't know how to transfer links. One question? What does the factory use on all of it's hyd. roller cam cam set ups? i.e. Magnums and stuff?

Seems people are waiting for someone else to be the guinea pig!   All I know is I have 8k in parts in my engine and I'm leaning towards what works. So what if I have to replace it every 3-4 years.  I took your advice and sent AndyF a PM ? I'll let you know what he says? I asked Jason ( stroker) about it and he went with the bronze gear too?

Hughes Engines is now offering theese gears premounted on a shaft. Well, since may of 2013, anyway. So, one would think that they must work for a reputable place to be selling them? http://www.hughesengines.com/Index/products.php?browse=search&search=6213&searchmode=partnumber&partid=28107

Got one of these for my roller setup which says the ends are heat treated for reduced wear but we shall see. I know bronze works so go with what you know.
