electrical mystery, need help
« on: April 11, 2005 - 07:10:02 PM »
Just started about a week ago, every time we drive the cuda for about 30 minutes or more, when you shut it off, the battery is dead.
Jump start it, runs fine.

new battery, new starter relay, new voltage regulator, new alternator (6 months old), new distributor.

It seems to have started shortly after I changed from the original points distributor to electronic ignition.
mopar performance distributor. still uses the ballast resistor. also put in an msd coil, 45000 volts

after charging the battery, voltage reads 13.0
start car, voltage goes up to 15 and floats around a little, so alternator and regulator seems to be working? or is this a false test, does this increase tell me the alternator is good?
what about that voltage, is it too high? should it be rock steady or float a little like =/- .25 volt

any ideas? its getting irratating to have to jump start this beast every time after driving for 30 minutes.

does anyone have a wiring skematic for this distributor with external voltage regulator, and ballast resistor and coil?

also, i can disconnect the battery while the engine is running and it runs fine. Battery is in the trunk.

can a bad engine ground mess with this? I have no strap at this time.

HELP

13.2 V is normal battery voltage , if it goes up to 15 v the alt is working , it should sit around 14.5 v until the charge is back in the battery then it should sit around 13.8v,if it doesn`t do this then either there is too much resistance between the atl & battery or there is a problem with the reg or a diode is shot in the alt ,
As for why the battery is dead you do need a battery cable size ground strap between the engine & frame of the car , what size + cable are you using all the way to the trunk ?

the + cable to the trunk is large like 8 gauge that comes with the summit battery relocation kit.
I will put a large engine groiund cable on and see if it helps.
i may move the battery back to engine compartment and see if that helps.

If the voltage is floating around when engine running it means the voltage reg is not working correctly?

floates from 15.2 to 14.5 unsteady.

I use 1 guage welding cable for battery in trunk relocations
