Help using factory wiring with 6.1 and aftermarket gauges
« on: February 17, 2014 - 08:40:18 PM »
So heres what I'm doing .

1st: running 6.1 with manual tranny
2nd .using factory harness thruout
3rd: purchase thunder classic dash with autometer gauges

I know that I have to put the wire from the alternator to the starter. and eliminate the original wire. But what to do with the amp meter wires both black and red . Because I have gone to a volt meter these are no longer needed.

next how to supply the dash harness now that these wires are no longer connected.

I have most off the dash together but want to know what is next with these wires and how to use the originals

you can connect the red and black wires for the amp meter together, and insulate that connection well. make sure you secure it well out of the way and you can forget about it. Then all you need to do is run a power wire from the accessory bus and hook it up to the volt guage and then a good ground to complete the circuit. pretty much the same as wiring a lightbulb, which i assume you will need to do to power the back lighting for the gauges. For this circuit I just tapped off the dash dimmer circuit.

ok sounds good . so what about the original red it ran from the back of the alternator directly threw the engine harness to the back of the amp meter .
where should  that go in the engine compartment ?

the black wire should be going to the back of the alt, and the red wire will be going to the starter relay thru a fusible link i believe

I looked at my wiring diagram in the 70 manual I have looks like the red is on the alternator im going to double check . having said that . the wire that comes from the fusible link I assume is going to power my dash? then the one that came from the alternator would be a dead end now ? even if I connect them together where the amp meter was

So I told a look at the diagram and you were correct in what wires were going where . I had though they were the opposite. thanks for correcting me . As for the wire that used to go from the back of the alternator to the harness . what should I be doing with it?

Good question. I am not confident giving any advice on modern electrical systems (higher amps, discrete voltage systems, digital buses) but maybe there are others here who are ....best bet would be to post in the electrical section.....also if you havent checked out http://www.madelectrical.com/ spend some time there as its a good resource for electrical tech
