Correct tires for a 74 Challenger
« on: February 18, 2014 - 10:03:38 AM »
What are the original tires for a 74 challenger, and who sells them?

My current tires are total garbage and I am considering changing them over the winter while re-doing the paint on the rims.

Car currently has rallies.

I believe in 1974 you had only two choices of tires on an E Body.
The standard tite they all came with would have been a 7.35 X 14 raised white wall tire. GoodYear
The optional tire would be a F70 X 14 raised white lettered tire - GoodYear PolyGlas GT

Kelsey Tire is the only manufacture of reproduction GoodYear tires.

Radials DID NOT come on 1974 E Bodies.

I am safe to say that this is not listed on the fender tag, correct? does anyone make a radial look-a-like?

Here's a question related to the OP...

Is there a radial out there that looks like a reproduction GoodYear PolyGlas GT ?

*edit*

reproduction tires are crazy expensive & probably drive as bad as they did back in the day.
14" rims are harder to fit.. Cooper Cobras are probably the best bang for your buck in radials

There's no "look-alike" radials out there that I know of. YES, reproduction PolyGlas are expensive and YES they ride just as good as they did in the 70's  I put them on all my cars...

If you want radials, there's endless choices out there. F70 X 14 = 215/70R/14 in a radial :2cents:

Most people decide to go bigger, if originality is not a concern.

I'm pretty sure I had 225-70's on mine for awhile.  That was a good looking size.  They were Cooper Cobra GTS's.

Quick search on EBay shows there are at least Cooper Tires as mentioned and also BF Goodrich Radial T/A's in the "factory size" http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.X215%2F70R%2F14&_nkw=215%2F70R%2F14&_sacat=0&_from=R40

I wouldn't recomend buying Kelsey's bias ply Goodyears! I purchased a set of 5 from them for my Super Bee. The first time I drove the car one of the tires came apart. There was a golf ball side bulge in the side wall. They sent me a new one to replace it. Eventually all 5 failed. When the last one failed they wouldn't stand behind them. They were out of warranty by 1 month.

WoW....I've NEVER seen that before... :22yikes: I've bought and installed 11 sets (44 tires) from Kelsey tires and NEVER had one single issue....On my personal cars I drive them all the time as well. :clueless: Been using them since 1994.

Cool thanks for all the help. I have found several cooper and bfg's. the question I really had was answered no one makes a radial "re-pop" polyglas tire.

I currently have general POS. the amount of wheel spin I get makes me think my 318 is pushing 800hp.
